#EURegionsWeek Cohesion Policy seminar: AEIDL joining forces with RSA CPnet and JRC! On 9 October 2024, the Regional Studies Association Research Network on Cohesion Policy (#CPNet) and the EU Joint Research Centre REMO team are co-organising, as part of the EU Regions Week, a session on the future of #CohesionPolicy. The workshop, entitled “How to reconcile Growth and Convergence. Exploring the neglected dilemma of Cohesion Policy” will seek to address these key strategic questions: - Can cohesion policy promote overall growth while also delivering regional convergence? - Can the policy objectives co-exist under the policy remit without tensions? - Where should the balance lie between the two? AEIDL will be facilitating this discussion among scholars and experts about equity-efficiency trade-offs faced by cohesion policy and avenues to address them. The topic will be addressed from both a theoretical and empirical perspective, by presenting work from academia, RSA #CPnet and the JRC REMO team. 📅 Wed 09/10/2024, 09:30 - 10:30 CET 🔑 Code: 09WS241668 📍 Albert Borschette Congress Center, Room AB-3A, Brussels Limited places. Register here by 31 August: https://lnkd.in/e7rsDUyk

Quo vadis, Cohesion Policy? European regional development is at a crossroads. It is challenged by a changing global landscape (war, competition, transitions) and needs to position itself among various trade-offs. In my new Policy Paper, I provide an overview of the ongoing debate: 1. The Quest of Cohesion Policy‘s mission 2. Narrowing fiscal space and doubts on effectiveness 3. Optimal Policy design in light of the RRF 4. Synergies with other policies You find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/evfkXVpT The future of Cohesion Policy is currently debated all over Europe. Yesterday and today we had interesting sessions at the RSA Europe conference in Florence (with lively interactive exchanges). The next weeks will be pivotal with fundamental decisions by the European Council. #Cohesion #CohesionPolicy #EU

Academia vs real life. I'm always happy when an article comes out in the final issue of a journal with page numbers etc. This piece I've written in 2020. It was accepted July 2021... While the title now reads cumbersome. I still think the study makes an important contribution for understanding BRICS from the inside, exploring what value it offers for the five members at the time: domestic regime stability, protection against unwanted external interferences, multi-alignment foreign policy, boosting regional authority. https://lnkd.in/eae9MhnQ

https://lnkd.in/ddWiVqqM <<The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is a welcome instrument for participatory democracy at European level. Introduced by the Lisbon Treaty, it entered into force in 2012 and allows Europeans to make legislative proposals and participate in decision-making by connecting directly with EU institutions. It is a chance for members of the public to discuss and influence key policies and it sheds further light on the public's view of the EU's agenda and priorities. The ECI Day is an important forum and platform where registered and future ECI organisers and stakeholders can exchange information and experiences and present their initiatives and activities to the public. >> #ECI #ECIDay #EP #EU #ECAS #citizen #Brussels

Mission-Driven Government is also essential for the effective localization of #SDGs and #sustainabledevelopment. As Mariana Mazzucato states, mission-driven government, based on an historically informed understanding of what policymakers are capable of doing for the common good, is critical in today’s world. While it need not follow a fixed path, it does call for fundamental changes to longstanding processes and assumptions, also at a local level, particularly moving substate governments to re-imagine their role and public policies strategic planning. https://lnkd.in/d6z3tF9p Deusto Business Diplomacy

New contribution in our forum where leading experts discuss EU enlargement and reform.
New contribution to SIEPS Fit for 35 Forum: Enlargement will only succeed if the EU embraces more flexibility Enlargement policy has been re-discovered as the most powerful tool to stabilize the EU’s neighbourhood. Professor Daniela Schwarzer argues that enlargement will only be successful if the EU becomes more flexible in integrating new members and in its functioning, while enhancing legitimacy and protecting its basic principles more forcefully. Daniela Schwarzer is a member of the Executive Board of the Bertelsmann Stiftung and honorary professor of political science at Freie Universität Berlin.. Fit for 35 Forum aims at contributing to the discussion on enlargement and reform of the EU. The Forum is set up by SIEPS, initiated and managed by Göran von Sydow (Director) and Dr. Valentin Kreilinger (Senior Researcher in Political Science).
