Everyone's putting on a brave face, but let's be honest - software development is in a rough spot. Investments are frozen, clients are hesitant, yet hope persists. The question on everyone's mind: What can we do? My two cents - build our own product and hire only the ones you really need. Companies that rely solely on client work will always face challenges in terms of both autonomy and stability. Needs change on a daily basis. Deadlines shift. One day you rock, the other day they don't need you anymore. But if we build our own products, we can at least have autonomy and some level of stability in our business. And my second point is, we should all take a strategic approach to hiring. Having a strong development team in such dynamic times and industry is crucial. There's nothing worse than hiring just to play big and show our worth, while our employees can't rely on us.

How to know what a realistic budget for a software development project is? Here is my recipe: If you have a software development team, have them work it out. I am not going to go into how this is done (I blogged about it on my company's blog: https://lnkd.in/dU5AJ8iK), but a development team should be able to do it. If you don't, hire a software development agency to work with you on specifying a project and providing exact timelines and budgets. The downside of this is that it will take up some of your budget. The upside is that you'll end up with a specification document that should: - have the general concept of the solution - have a basic concept of the data model - have a basic list of tasks and how they'll be done - have a timeline - have a budget estimate Even if you're not happy with the budget and timelines, you can use the specification to go to the next company and ask them if they feel it's realistic, but this time providing a lot more technical detail. #softwaredevelopment
