There’s no such thing as keyword cannibalization, only search intent cannibalization. What does this mean? It means the risk of cannibalization is when 2 pages have an overlapping search intent, rather than just an overlap of keywords. There are cases where, despite having somewhat similar keywords on 2 pages, there are no duplicate content or cannibalization issues. Programmatic SEO pages are a good example of this. Typically, the page structure is 80% the same across hundreds (or in some cases even thousands) of variations; still, the pages don’t hinder each other’s performance. Why? Because even with the tweak of a few words, if the search intent shifts, the cannibalization risk of duplicate content eradicates itself. On the other hand, if there are 2 or more pages where, although the keywords (in the literal sense) are totally unique, cannibalization would be in play if the search intent isn’t unique. A classic SaaS example would be if you take 3 unique keywords: ➡️ Email marketing software ➡️ Email marketing platform ➡️ Email marketing tool You create 3 different pages on these, which would cause cannibalization, although technically speaking, the keywords were unique. The problem is that the search intent was still the same for all these keywords. To summarize, if you have two or more pages and you’re thinking about duplicate content or cannibalization risks, ask yourself: Do these two (or more) pages provide any unique value (unique is the key word here)?
