The 2024 list of Martech tools on the market has just been released by Scott Binkler. The total number is now a staggering 14,106. This indicates accelerated growth over the last year. 📈 The number of tools grew by 12% year on year, but last year, it grew by 28%! At the same time, we found in our study "The Marketing Department '23" that ⚠️ Martech investments deliver lower than expected or uncertain impact. ⚠️ They cost more time and money than expected. ⚠️ Investment in Martech will continue to grow. In our experience, Martech investments are driven mainly by opportunities pushed by vendors and tech consultants but often lack a solid business case. The 32nd edition of The CMO Survey is out and just looking at the key takeaways paints a picture of overinvestment and underutilization that has CMOs disappointed in the performance of their investment in MarTech. With only 34% of CMOs believing the performance of their MarTech lives up to expectations, the biggest culprits are holistic integration into existing systems and the acquisition of new skills to manage their stacks. So... no real surprises. Again. And that against only 56% utilisation of the tools purchased. Now, if you're struggling to integrate and manage only just over half of your MarTech, that speaks volumes about shortcomings in both planning and implementation. It just goes to show that any form of digital business transformation is not something to be taken lightly. Or leapt into. The upfront investment in establishing strategic objectives, gap analysis, roadmapping, and everything else attached to change management remains absolutely critical... and is very likely not being afforded enough time, energy, and resources by the majority of CMOs.
