Fostering ASEAN Digital Innovations Participating in the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 FGD on Digital Innovations with diplomats was an invigorating experience. During this engaging session, we explored both private and public perspectives, aiming to tackle the most critical challenges in our pursuit of tangible progress. Our goal was clear to identify practical measures and actionable strategies. The FGD took place as part of the ASEAN Connectivity Strategic Plan (ACSP), hosted jointly by The ASEAN Secretariat and ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia. This significant event unfolded in Kuala Lumpur on June 11-13, 2024, aligning with Malaysia's upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship. Beyond digital innovation, the ACSP envisions several key areas: sustainable infrastructure, smart and sustainable urban development, seamless logistics and supply chains, regulatory cooperation, excellence, and robust people-to-people connectivity. During our spirited discussion, I introduced the Microsoft Whiteboard as a powerful ideation tool. Leveraging Copilot's capabilities, we seamlessly requested suggestion ideas and topics, categorized them, and distilled our insights into concise summaries. The response from one of the participants was enthusiastic, "Wow, what an amazing tool!" This individual, already familiar with Copilot Chat and Word, appreciated the efficiency and creativity. Our group agreed to provide valuable inputs related to AI. Specifically, we emphasized the need to establish the ASEAN AI Safety Institute, facilitate Asean Trusted Data Transfer, and AI Skilling Initiative. These initiatives serve as essential follow-ups to the ASEAN AI Governance and Ethics Guide and the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). Together, we are shaping a visionary ASEAN Community, where innovation thrives, connectivity flourishes, and shared progress becomes our legacy. #ASEAN #digitalinnovations #economicai

🔍 As a part the CEE Digital Coalition, an entity gathering leading ICT trade associations from across Central Eastern Europe, we are committed to building a competitive and innovative digital economy in Europe and a prosperous, safe, modern society in our region. To that end, we need Europe to be a front runner in the ongoing AI revolution. As rightly pointed out in a recent letter signed by dozens of companies “Europe can’t afford to miss out on the widespread benefits from responsibly built open AI technologies that will accelerate economic growth and unlock progress in scientific research. For that we need harmonised, consistent, quick and clear decisions under EU data regulations that enable European data to be used in AI training for the benefit of Europeans”. Together with the organisations from 9 Central Eastern European countries, we appeal to decision makers to consider the importance of a strong #AI sector in Europe and for models to be trained on European data. #CEEdigitalcoalition #INFOBALT #AI #ICT #Data AAVIT – Asociace pro aplikovaný výzkum v IT #DigitalPoland The Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association - LIKTA APDETIC ANIS Romania Bulgarian Association of Information Technologies /BAIT/ Digital National Alliance Bulgaria SAPIE - Slovak Alliance for Innovation Economy #ICTassociationofSlovenia

𝗜𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗜𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮’𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽? 𝗜𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗜𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮, former EU Commissioner for Research and Innovation, highlights that to lead the AI revolution, Europe must address the fragmented landscape of research data, talent, and infrastructure. While progress has been made through initiatives like Horizon Europe and the European Innovation Council (EIC), more focused action is needed to secure global competitiveness. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱? European Innovation Council (EIC): The EIC has supported over 1,000 deep-tech start-ups, helping bridge the gap between research and commercialization. Horizon Europe: With €95.5 billion in funding, it has driven cross-border collaboration on AI projects across Europe. European Open Science Cloud (EOSC): As a flagship initiative, the EOSC provides researchers with seamless access to data and services, ensuring Europe’s scientific community has AI-ready infrastructure. This will be key in boosting collaboration across disciplines and accelerating AI adoption. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁? Upgrading High-Performance Computers: Europe is transforming its network of supercomputers into "𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀" providing the infrastructure needed for cutting-edge research and development. Leveraging Regulations: Enhancing the regulatory framework—especially in areas like copyright, AI, and data governance—will help facilitate the quick adoption and circulation of AI advancements across Europe. According to a recent report from the European Court of Auditors, the EU faces significant hurdles in achieving its AI goals, particularly in terms of fragmented governance and investment coordination. The report also points out that existing AI strategies may lack the focused governance and investment necessary to fully unlock the potential of AI in Europe. Ivanova’s vision aligns with these findings, underlining the need for increased funding and better coordination between existing initiatives to ensure that Europe’s AI ambitions can be realized. To achieve its AI goals, the EU will need stronger governance alongside increased and better-targeted public and private investment moving forward. #European #Competitiveness and #AI: It was a pleasure to give a lecture at SPES Academy "Carlo Azeglio Ciampi" on these key issues for the future of Europe in the new #global #geopolitical, #economic and #technological #context. #Europe has the potential, capability and once in a lifetime opportunity to grow through #investment of resources in #AI and the development of #IT #infrastructures and #computing capabilities, also leveraging incentives for #private investments. In particular, as highlighted in the #Draghi #Report I mentioned the need and urgency to: a) #focus on increasing #skills of #users, #workers, #students and #citizens on the effective use of #AI, #data, #cloud and other key technologies which are changing our economy and society; b) #promote a #culture of #integrating #AI into #business processes should be a #priority for #companies of all sizes, from small and medium-sized to large businesses, as well as for the #public #sector; c) #invest in #high-#speed, #reliable #digital #connectivity and #secure, #sustainable #data #centers, which together form the basis for the development and deployment of AI, including by leveraging hashtag #public-#private #partnerships and #cross-#border #data #flows; d) #remove the #barriers that prevent #innovative #companies from growing and attracting investments, through #regulatory #simplification or even through advanced regulation tools such as #sandboxes that can provide controlled ecosystems to allow innovation in compliance with regulatory frameworks.
