Ransomware attackers are increasingly demanding privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like #Monero, but its rising cost and difficulty in acquisition have kept Bitcoin as the primary payment method. Many victims struggle to meet Monero demands, leading attackers to often accept Bitcoin when faced with these logistical hurdles. This shift has significantly reduced ransomware payments in anything other than Bitcoin. While attackers may prefer Monero for anonymity, they prioritize quick payments and compromise when necessary. However, they still use mixers to anonymize traceable Bitcoin, adding another layer of complexity. #Ransomware #CyberSecurity #Cryptocurrency #Bitcoin #CyberTrends

Yes, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been used by some bad actors due to its pseudonymous nature, which allows for transactions without directly revealing the identities of the parties involved. This has made it attractive for cybercriminals, hackers, and people involved in illegal activities, including ransomware attacks, money laundering, and dark web transactions. However, while Bitcoin can provide a level of anonymity, it is not completely untraceable. Every Bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, which means law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity experts can often trace and track transactions back to individuals or groups. Over the years, governments have developed increasingly sophisticated tools to monitor and identify suspicious activities involving cryptocurrencies. While Bitcoin has been used in criminal activities, it's also worth noting that the vast majority of Bitcoin transactions are legal and involve investments, trading, and legitimate business transactions. #Bitcoin #CryptoSecurity #BlockchainTechnology #BitcoinCrimes #CryptoTracking #Cybersecurity #Cryptocurrency

🕵️ 💱 In 2023, illicit addresses sent US$22.2B worth of cryptocurrency to services, which is a significant decrease from the US$31.5B sent in 2022. Some of this drop may be attributed to an overall decrease in crypto transaction volume, both legitimate and illicit. However, the drop in money laundering activity was steeper, at 29.5%, compared to the 14.9% drop in total transaction volume. 🦹♂️ 💱 💵 Along with the reduction in absolute value, and the reduction in the share of crypto transaction volume associated with illicit activity - a shift in the types of assets involved in cryptocurrency-based crime is visibly being made into stablecoins. Through 2021, Bitcoin reigned supreme as the cryptocurrency of choice among cybercriminals, likely due to its high liquidity. But that’s changed over the last two years, with stablecoins now accounting for the majority of all illicit transaction volume. This change also comes alongside recent growth in stablecoins’ share of all crypto activity overall, including legitimate activity.
