AI has been used in healthcare for a while now, often in ways that patients don’t see. For example, #AI is used to optimize a hospital’s workforce and inventory, making sure the facility is properly staffed and supplied. However, new McKinsey & Company research suggests that the healthcare field is behind most other industries in adopting AI. It’s a very fragmented industry, with tons of hospitals. And the systems that have been used in those hospitals have tended to be bespoke, which makes it difficult to copy innovations specific to one care setting and paste them to another. Another issue has been data, which has been siloed within hospital walls and has not been transferable to other hospitals. So, is Generative AI the answer? My McKinsey colleague, Delphine Nain Zurkiya, a senior partner in our Boston office believes #genai doesn’t have a technology issue but it has a design issue. The technology generally works pretty well so now we need design folks to think more about what it will take for the healthcare industry to adopt it. When these systems are well designed, with users in mind, that’s when you’ll see it really take off and, in turn, help make populations healthier. Check out her thinking in a new edition of Re:think from McKinsey Global Publishing.

I had the privilege of being a guest speaker at UCLA Health Data Day last week: "Using Artificial Intelligence to Transform Healthcare." It was inspiring to see #UCLAHealth at the forefront of thought leadership when it comes to #AI and #healthcare. Thanks to Paul Lukac, MD, MBA, MS, Albert Duntugan, and Nigam Shah for an excellent panel on where we are and where we're headed. We discussed thought provoking questions like: Do physicians need to understand how AI works? Where is AI in the hype cycle? What is the ROI for AI? Do we need to obtain patient consent to use AI in their care? What's the value of AI quality assurance labs? Many would agree that one of the current, most promising use cases for generative AI is ambient AI technology. I firmly believe this should be adopted by all our clinicians to decrease administrative burden, so clinicians can enjoy care again. It's a win-win-win for clinicians, patients, and health systems alike.

This year, we’re seeing a significant shift in the #healthcare industry — artificial intelligence now accounts for about 5% of total revenue. 🔍 What does this mean for your organization? If your organization hasn’t yet embraced #AI, you might be missing out on a valuable opportunity. That 5% isn’t just a number; it’s a clear indicator of the direction the industry is heading. AI is helping healthcare providers improve patient care, streamline operations, and open up new revenue streams. It is the time to think about how AI can fit into your strategy and help your organization thrive in this changing landscape.

The article from Axios notes that even AI optimists don't expect the technology to fundamentally remake the U.S. healthcare system anytime soon, but there is widespread agreement that AI has the potential to vastly improve the quality of care and trim costly waste. The scale of change that AI could bring to healthcare impacts both patients and the millions of people employed in the system, who will ultimately shape how widely it's adopted. The healthcare system is very resistant to change, in part due to heavy regulation and the trillions of dollars at stake. This will temper AI's adoption, especially in ways that could cost jobs or money. However, uses that drive up revenue, increase productivity, or improve healthcare workers' quality of life will be more likely to be integrated. Experts say AI will allow computers to do what they do best, while freeing up humans to focus on what they do best. But healthcare is a much more complicated sector than others where tech has succeeded, so a more humble and deeper understanding is required. The extent to which AI becomes ingrained in healthcare will depend on the incentives in place. In some cases, AI already makes sense, and can benefit both patients and providers. But the path forward is not straightforward, and will require continuous refinement and learning from failures. https://lnkd.in/ekKBrUW5 #healthcare #healthcareai #healthcareit #ai #his #genai

AI could be a key tool to alleviate pressure on the global healthcare sector by facilitating early and accurate diagnosis, helping to treat patients more effectively and reducing workload by automating some tasks. However, only 60% of healthcare leaders say their organization is investing in AI, compared to an average of 80%. Differing healthcare systems and patient populations around the world are just some of the issues that could be influencing this low investment. 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿. 88% of healthcare executives believe in AI's potential, yet only 15% fully trust AI outcomes. What’s your stance on AI transparency in healthcare? Do current AI models offer enough explanation for their decisions? Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is revolutionizing healthcare by bridging the gap between cutting-edge tech and user trust. When AI drives crucial health decisions, transparency isn’t just a feature—it’s a necessity. XAI boosts trust by breaking down "black box" models, making outcomes understandable and fostering a more reliable healthcare system. How can healthcare professionals enhance AI transparency? Begin with self-interpretable models for inherent clarity. Use post hoc explanations to clarify complex AI behaviors without losing sophistication. Adopt methods like Local Rule-Based Explanations (LORE) for instance-specific insights, making AI decisions clearer for clinicians and patients alike. Implementing XAI is not just technically smart—it’s ethically essential to make AI in healthcare trustworthy and accessible to all. #AI #Healthcare #Transparency #ExplainableAI #XAI #Innovation #Trust #HealthTech #EthicalA Impressed by the benefits of XAI in healthcare? Or do you think it still poses risks we are overlooking? Share your thoughts on this emerging topic. Your insights could impact the future of AI in healthcare!
