90% of the interviews you take will be simple and straightforward. But what about the other 10%? Most reporters aren’t looking for a scoop. But some journalists - especially if they’re covering a polarizing topic - will want to drill down on certain facts to ensure you’re not just paying them lip service. Here are a few tips that can help you as you head into your next 1:1 with a reporter. 🚫 What NOT to Do: - Ramble: Don't fill the silence out of nervousness - rambling can unravel all your media prep. - Offer info “off the record: Don’t agree to “on background” comments if you’re not willing to be quoted publicly. - Overexaggerate to prove a point: Don’t exaggerate your words for a more dramatic soundbite. ✅ What to Do: - Own the Pause: Politely ask, “Did that answer your question?” to regain composure. - Stay on Record: If you can’t say it on the record, don’t say it at all. - Clarify: Correct any misinterpretations by reemphasizing your point: “Actually, I said...”

“What other voices will be in the story?” Ask this question whenever a journalist requests an interview. Finding out who else they plan to speak with will help you determine whether their story is about YOU (your organization), or about a broader issue shared by your competitors and comparable organizations. Usually you’d prefer the latter, especially if it’s a sensitive story. If your spokesperson or organization happens to be on one side of a contentious issue in current events, this question may help you find out whether your opponents are being interviewed, and perhaps even which ones. You can prepare messaging to counter their likely arguments. Here are some other questions you should never forget to ask journalists when they call: https://lnkd.in/geUS5imS

Tech clients, especially challenger brands, tend to be focused on the media opps their PR function generates. I get it. The issue is, securing the opp is one thing, nailing it is another. As with Presidential debates, in media interviews, prep is everything. We use the resource below for clients. It also appeared the book I co-wrote with Borjana Slipicevic. You can have it for free. Spend time on interview prep. Often, it is where shit all goes wrong (or right). Good luck.

The best media interviews I've staffed start with some rapport building. Maybe you grew up in the same town, or your kids are the same age—small personal connections can go a long way. Journalists are just people, and showing some humanity helps create a more natural conversation. A friendly gesture or reference can leave a positive impression. Don’t underestimate the value of engaging with them on a human level. #PublicRelations #TechPR #PRAgency #Communications

Most spokespersons are "great" until they say a little too much. Then begins the race to stop the journalist from publishing the extra bit. "Please don’t print that.” "It will damage the brand." "We will talk about that topic in a separate interview." Multiple reasons are given to ensure that the journalist cooperates. Here’s the hard truth: Once it’s said, it’s out there. You’re at the mercy of the media. That's why Prevention > Damage control. Here's how you can ensure prevention: - Plan your talking points before any interview - Role-play potential questions - Pause before you answer. Do these to control your narrative before the media does. How have you been approaching media interviews so far?
