Where I live, in Tunbridge Wells, we have a (frankly, embarrassing) football/rugby chant that goes: "Oh Tunbridge Wells is wonderful! Oh Tunbridge Wells is wonderful, it's full of Lawyers, Doctors and Architects, oh Tunbridge Wells is wonderful"... I did warn you... It's actually full of people with loads of different types of job, but the thing is, I've always been a bit jealous of lawyers, doctors and architects - not because I particularly want to *be* one, but because it must be so much easier to explain what you do, to someone at a party - even to your friends, your mum or your kids. When I tell people* what I do for a job, I find myself having to follow it up with this explanation. Me: I'm a content writer Them: Oh, right. OK. Cool. [massive pause] Them: So... Me: OK, so you know when you visit a website, there are usually pictures and some writing. I do the writing part. And if there's a blog, I often write those bits too. And maybe you download an article or a guide? I also do that. Those emails or newsletters from a business, telling you about their new products and services? Yep, I do those...and sometimes write their LinkedIn posts. Them: So you're a copywriter then? Me: Technically not, but if that's easier to remember than Content Writer, then yes. Not as easy as Doctor, Lawyer, or Architect, but I'll take that. * OK, not 'people' - mostly just my mum. [Pictured below is the famous Pantiles. I’ll never forget that night at The Times-Picayune. There I was, a fresh-faced copy editor, ready to wrap up the national news section. Clock ticking. Deadline looming. Then it hit. The dreaded AP newswire alert. Breaking news story. Late in the evening. 😅 My heart sank. “We can’t possibly fit this in now,” I thought. But my mentor, Tom Jindra, saw it differently. “Dave,” he said, “this is why we’re here. Our readers need to know.” With a calm demeanor, Tom guided me through swapping out a less urgent story for this breaking news. It felt like defusing a bomb, but we did it. That night taught me more than just editing: ➡️ 1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞. The world doesn’t care about your perfect plan. ➡️ 2. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Give your audience what they need, not what’s convenient. ➡️ 3. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞. Panic is the enemy of good work. Years later, running Super Copy Editors, I still hear Tom’s voice when curveballs come our way. We adapt. We prioritize. We deliver. Here’s the most important hire for any marketing team: 🥇An excellent writer. Over anyone with digital prowess, a great writer is essential. If you can’t tell a good story in marketing, you will lose every single time. Any time I got to hire for my team, or when I consult on hiring for a marketing team, my number one recommendation is this: If you have to choose between a full-time writer or someone with digital experience, go with the writer. You can always hire an agency to help with digital until you can bring it in-house. My recent post isn’t even about hiring a content writer, yet some of you still apply without reading it properly! Then, you complain, “We’ve applied to so many positions but didn’t get any response.” Yaar, at least take a moment to read the entire post. You can’t just glance at the heading and assume the details. This approach wastes both your time and the recruiter’s. Let’s be honest—how can you expect to land a job if you don’t even bother to understand what’s being asked?

Add to all her suggestions "and hire a writer", and you're all set to get your content strategy and your content design right from the get-go. Or, how about hiring someone, who is an editor AND a writer [cough, humble self-promo ;-) ].

Question for my creative leaders: How do you go about hiring a copywriter in a language you don't speak? 🤔🇩🇪 Pretty soon, Famly is going to be opening up for applications for our first German copywriter, but as a card-carrying British Man I of course left my German skills back in Year nine.... So I'm left wondering...how the hell do I assess this person? I'm particularly interested in questions like: 🤝 How do I bring in non-technical but nonetheless German-speaking employees at Famly to help? 💼 How do I assess the take-home assignment without butchering the language by running it through DeepL? So far I'm thinking that it'll be a lot about relying on some gut instincts from our german-speaking team, asking a lot of situational questions in the interview, and maybe even finding a german-speaking creative leader to help me at the very end of the process.
