In this piece I share six things that matter in scaling the adoption of self-directed learning from Achieving the Dream’s work with the Postsecondary Teaching with Tecnology Collaborative which includes six #ATDNetwork colleges and their faculty. The learnings build on our work in #OER, adopting adaptive courseware, and with the NC State Belk Center teaching and learning hubs. All six are important for colleges working to build a culture of teaching and learning excellence to drive student success results.
The things that matter:
—Leadership with aligned policies and explicit resource allocation
—An organizational structure to support faculty professional learning
—integrating self-directed learning into course content rather than relying on one student success course
—Understand faculty workload and create supports for faculty adoption that don’t add undue burden
—integrate adoption into the college’s technology strategy
—Connect self-directed learning to the institution’s equity efforts
