Caution to Entrepreneurs With so many layoffs of highly skilled people there is no doubt many may start their own businesses. I want to give a warning as you make choices on how you pull your businesses identity together. With every creative piece of your brand, marketing collateral please read all the Terms and Conditions when choosing vendors or applications. As an Example I am on the Board of a nonprofit and I am looking into logo creation for the organization. Several people have recommended Fiverr. It is so easy, looks like a great opportunity to get a cheap logo. HOWEVER, lift up the hood and look under it!! Read the T&Cs. Here is what I found when I looked under the hood: 1. You will NEVER "own" your logo! You have rights to use it, but those rights have many limitations that you must know about or you could be subject to a lawsuit later. 2. They are only initially selling you a "Private Use" license! If you intend to use that logo or other content to "make money", you must purchase a "Commercial License" through Fiverr. Now you need to read the T&Cs for that. And you still NEVER own your logo, only use of it! 3. If the creator you use uses images through Fiverr, it will be through Shutterstock. You now need to read their T&Cs. Be prepared to be shocked, but informed! These are under the layers of T&Cs. Again you have limitations you better know about or you could be in a legal battle down the road. Here is an example of a very interesting limitation they add, if your Shutterstock image is going to be used in marketing this is the limit; Printed in physical form as part of product packaging and labeling, letterhead and business cards, point of sale advertising, CD and DVD cover art, or in the advertising and copy of tangible media, including magazines, newspapers, and books provided no Image is reproduced more than 500,000 times in the aggregate." *If your business takes off and you used the logo or content for branding and you have this limitation you will need to buy the new license. 4. If you want to remove the reproduction limits, you will need to purchase an "Enhanced Commercial License". You will still have limitations and never own your logo. 5. The creator of your content who retains ownership has all rights to resell your logo or content as many times as they want. Who feels good about that cheap price tag now? Anyone who endeavors to spend their savings and take the path of entrepreneurship I do advise you to at least consult Legal Shield for advise to start. There is a small monthly fee which you can discontinue at any time with no penalty. It will be worth it! Also, get into groups of people who are business owners, engage with your areas Small Business Administration team, etc. Take the time to gain knowledge that will prevent wrong choices.
