Breaking into VC hack: Use VC internships to get your foot in the door. I did this through Harlem Capital's program. What I didn't realize is how many others have and continue to do the same. Harlem Capital is a market maker and mover in diversity-lens investing. Outside of our investments, we are also focused on cultivating the next generation of diverse VC checkwriters. We've had 117 interns over 6 years, you can see the impact in the screenshot. It's incredible! If your firm has a VC internship program, flag it in the comments for aspiring VCs. #venturecapital #founder #startup #recruiting #hiring

Summer Internship Reflection: Leveling Up in VC Land Happy to share my incredible summer internship experience at Inventus Capital Partners, a renowned US-based VC firm. This opportunity not only enhanced my skills but also fueled my passion for the startup ecosystem. Key Highlights: - Researched 67 anti-portfolio companies from 18 years of deal-flow data, analyzing their transition from startup to unicorn status. - Collaborated with a US counterpart to crack the code on product-market fit, honing my analytical skills. - Witnessed startup founders pitch to legendary investor Kanwal Rekhi, gaining invaluable insights into how VCs evaluate founders and companies. - Facilitated connections between startups and angel investors, fostering meaningful relationships. - Developed fluency in "VC language," understanding funding rounds, term sheets, and more. Shikhin Garg's mentorship and trust in me, enabling a fresh undergrad to experience something of this magnitude is truly remarkable. So what's next? Who knows! But after this summer, I feel like I could take on the whole Silicon Valley! (Just joking ... or am I?)

10 tips for how to make a big impact at your internship this summer: Adjusting to life in the startup and VC fast lane is a shock. Everyone is resource-strapped, time-poor, and the expectations to perform are high. These are the 10 things you need to learn if you want to make a real impact as an intern or associate this summer (especially if you have no clue what you’re doing): 1. Act like an owner - remember that startups and VCs are cash-poor, equity-rich. 2. Be a storyteller - frame and craft the narrative you want people to hear. 3. Manage yourself, up, and down - additional resources are great but can be a burden. Learn to manage yourself, your boss, and your peers. 4. Be urgent, don’t rush - always show you’re taking things seriously, deliver timely, but don’t make mistakes. 5. Ask for forgiveness, not permission - initiative and not having to be asked to do something goes a long way. Anticipate the needs of your team. 6. Be resourceful - Google and your network are your best friends. Start there first. 7. Never ask the same question twice - if you need to, show progress, critical thinking, and frame it a different way. 8. Solutions, not problems - even if you’re not sure it’s right, come with proposed solutions to ANY problem you’re surfacing. 9. Don’t get set up to fail - get crystal clear on what the expectations are and the final product you’re delivering. 10. People treat you the way you let them treat you - confidence is key. Fake it until you make it. Hiring and coaching an intern has been one of the BEST uses of our time and resources this summer for HSR Ventures, and our superstar Jaclyn Kolbert is an example to follow. #nationalinternday #startup #vc #careerdevelopment

Working at a startup is totally different from a normal corporate job. Here are three things I learned so far from working at a startup this summer: 1. At such an early stage in a company's lifetime, things are progressing at lightning speed, so time management is an essential skill. ⏳⚡ 2. Being on a lean team means every member must possess a variety of soft and hard skills and be willing and ready to handle any challenge that is thrown at them. 🛠️💡 3. All members of the team must communicate effectively and understand every aspect of the business to provide valuable insight and have a clear vision of the task ahead. 🗣️🔍 I’m very thankful to my mentor, Ray Cantu, as well as the Students + Startups Internship Program run by Kaitlyn Jones and Alexandra E. Frey Also, Shoutout to our team members, Jay Arredondo and Rucha Ravindra Gole! 👏 #StartupLife #TimeManagement #Teamwork #Communication #Skills #Mentorship #StudentsAndStartups #CareerGrowth #SoftwareDevelopment #InternshipExperience

It's the summer internship season boss! Those interning at established corporate firms might be experiencing FOMO, wondering what it's like to contribute to building something entirely new at a startup. On the other hand, Startup interns might be curious about the renowned company experience and the structure of "corporate life." Can't decide which sounds better? You're not alone! True right? Big corporation or startup—which is the better choice for an internship? While large companies offer stability, startups provide hands-on experience that fosters entrepreneurial skills, adaptability, and insights into how to build an early-stage company. Plus, with more startups hiring interns for full-time roles, your internship could be the first step toward a successful career. After all, every global giant started as a startup, and today’s startups could be the next Uber or OpenAI. Dr. Samantha Dewalt, Managing Director, and Sarah Leedberg, Assistant Director of Innovation Programs at Lehigh@NasdaqCenter, highlight in University World News how startups give student interns unique opportunities for career growth. Ready to gain real-world career experience? Apply to intern at a startup this spring through Lehigh@NasdaqCenter’s Innovation Internship.
