What do you look for when hiring a data analyst? A question for employers. Skills? Schools? Degrees? Prior experiences? I have come across many job applicants recently. Many are seeking a data analyst position in the healthcare industry. When I searched "entry-level data analyst in healthcare" in the Jobs section of LinkedIn, I got 134 results in the whole country; when I did that on Indeed, I got about 200 results. Given the available talent pool size, not enough positions are currently open for sure. How can I help them? I can teach them some skills. I can teach them some healthcare knowledge. Before doing that, I would like to ask the most important question to the other side, the employers. What do you look for when hiring a data analyst? Is there something you forgot to tell us on the job posting? I also wrote many job postings in my career. I personally value this particular quality a lot, but it is often difficult to put it in words. It's "curiosity." I have seen many frustrated managers because their analysts only did what they were told to do. They didn't go one more step. They get stuck and just stop there without investigating the issues. They could have simply searched on Google and, nowadays, ChatGPT (by OpenAI) and Claude (by Anthropic) to troubleshoot, but they didn't do so. Why? In my opinion, those analysts are not curious and are not engaged with their tasks. I don't know how many employers/managers agree with me. Do you value this quality when hiring? I would like to hear your thoughts! I view that domain knowledge and skills are easier and will become a lot easier to acquire in the future. However, you cannot easily teach someone to be curious.
