Startups and space sector, individually and together, have been the buzzwords recently. Given the right regulatory environment and infrastructure, startups and private players in the space sector are expected to grow and write India’s space odyssey. Towards this objective, FDI in the space sector has been liberalized with the issuance of Press Note 1 (2024 series) allowing private players in the sector to set up their manufacturing facilities within the country. Under the amended FDI policy, upto 100% FDI has allowed in space sector with liberalized entry routes for FDI in Satellites, Launch Vehicles and associated systems or subsystems, creation of Spaceports for launching and receiving Spacecraft and manufacturing of space related components and systems. By way of offering the requisite infrastructure, IN-SPACe has established its first ‘Technical Centre’ in Ahmedabad. This Centre is equipped with the resources to support private entities in the space sector in designing, developing, simulating, and testing of space technologies. GalaxEye Space, a startup in the space technology industry, has secured $6.5 million in funding through a Series A funding round. The proceeds obtained from the initial completion of the present funding round will be allocated towards the deployment of GalaxEye’s inaugural satellite, known as the “Drishti Mission.” GalaxEye is creating native multi-sensor imaging satellites that are equipped with both optical multi-spectral imaging (MSI) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology. The primary objective of these satellites is to deliver uninterrupted and weather-independent data at each point on the Earth’s surface, hence providing advantages to sectors such as defense, agriculture, and mining. India's first rocket was launched in 1963. Since then 100's of rockets have been launched. But all of them were launched by a single organization - ISRO - The Indian Space Research Organization ISRO. The first private sector rocket was launched in 2022, almost sixty years after the launch of the first public sector rocket. Though there were so many large multi billion valued private sector organizations, it was a start-up that launched the first private sector rocket. This is yet another evidence of the role that start-ups are playing today in building Modern India. If you remember the ship that blocked the Suez Canal in 2021, you would remember the global chaos it had created. The extensive effect on international trade and the impact on the GDPs of various countries was alarming. Turns out, one of the major issues that caused the chaos was the lack of proper real-time imaging of the oceans and trade routes. This particular incident and a few more regarding smuggling, unsanctioned global trade, piracy, illegal fishing, and oil spills (that's a lot, yes) have made Gaurav Seth and Vinit Bansal understand the necessity of real-time ocean surveillance. Hence, PierSight Space was born, with the goal of providing 30-minute interval monitoring capabilities to shipping, insurance, defense, coastguard, oil and gas, and other organizations that rely on maritime intelligence. They aim to achieve this by integrating SAR and AIS imaging technologies in their sensors. This enables them to cover 100% of the ocean, even through cloud cover and darkness. PierSight Space was selected for the Techstars 3-month Accelerator Program in 2023. Around the same time, they raised their pre-see round of $600k led by All In Capital with participation from Techstars and a few more angel investors. Moving to early 2024, they raised their seed round of $6 Million, co-led by Elevation Capital & Alpha Wave Global, with more participation from Techstars. The startup is building its first satellite and wishes to launch aboard the ISRO's PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) to test its systems this year. Pixxel, a homegrown spacetech startup, has secured a significant supplier deal with NASA, marking the first such agreement for an Indian startup. This partnership is part of NASA's ₹39, 957 crore commercial small satellite data acquisition program, through which Pixxel will supply hyperspectral earth observation data to NASA, the US government, and academic institutions. This data will enhance NASA's earth science research and application efforts. Founded by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel specializes in developing hyperspectral imagery satellites. These satellites capture a spectrum of light divided into numerous narrow spectral bands, enabling detailed analysis of various planetary features. In February, Pixxel showcased its initial hyperspectral images, revealing intricate details of diverse geographical locations, including the Krishna River Delta in India and the Palm Islands in Dubai. Additionally, in April 2022, a satellite developed by Pixxel was launched into low orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket. The Bengaluru-based startup has collaborated with several notable space agencies, including ISRO and NASA. Furthermore, Pixxel successfully raised $36 million in a Series B funding round in June of the previous year, with contributions from Google and other investors.
