Measuring the Success of XR Applications Traditionally, initial development efforts on XR have been focused on gaming and entertainment, and less tech and content specifically designed for practical applications. Whilst we are beginning to see the exciting growth of XR beyond gaming into other sectors, it’s important to ask ourselves: what makes XR so special for these practical uses? Is it more efficient, safer, or engaging than using a regular mobile app? Measuring the sucess of XR can be tricky, but it really depends on your goals. Are you aiming for better efficiency, knowledge retention, or customer engagement? 1️⃣ Retention is key. We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again: Most XR experiences are a one-trick pony. The experience needs to engage users to use it over and over again. Metrics like returning user rates, frequency of use, and completion rates for specific tasks are far more indicative of an XR application’s success than downloads. 2️⃣ The user experience should be a key metric. Whether it’s by utilising heatmaps or analytics tools to understand how users navigate your XR environment, you need to have data to reveal areas of confusion or frustration that need optimisation. The big takeaway? Know what you want to achieve with your XR app, and use metrics that actually help you understand and improve it over time. After all, the best apps are the ones that keep users happy and engaged!
