“In a world full of doing, doing, doing, it’s important to take a moment to just breathe, to search inside yourself, to just be.” In 2024, tragically, a young EY employee died due to alleged overwork and extreme stress, and an HDFC employee also passed away reportedly due to overwhelming work pressure. Cases like this highlight the high-stress #corporate culture, driven by fast-paced work demands, tight deadlines, long hours, and, at times, mismatched responsibilities and pay. Workplace #stress actuates the body's "fight or flight" response, which in due course of time can harm physical and mental health, leading to symptoms like insomnia, hypertension, and depression. Recognizing these issues, many large companies like Apple, Google, and Nike have integrated mindfulness and meditation into their workplace culture, offering meditation spaces and programs to reduce stress and boost productivity. Research indicates that mindfulness can enhance mental #health, lower blood pressure, and improve overall job satisfaction, leading organizations of all sizes to embrace these stress-reducing initiatives and thus, becomes an unnegotiable part of every workplace. The Cost of Productivity: How Long Will We Tolerate This? 🤔 The recent passing of Anna Sebastian Peyaril, a 26-year-old professional from India, has sent shockwaves through the corporate world. Her tragic death, reportedly due to work-related stress at EY India, serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges we face in today’s workplace. 💼💔 Anna was a vibrant individual with dreams and aspirations, and her story compels us to ask: How long will we continue to normalise a work culture that prioritises results over the well-being of individuals? It´s time to be clear: chronic stress, micromanagement, and work overload are pressing issues affecting millions of employees globally. According to the World Health Organization, stress is the leading cause of absenteeism, costing businesses around $300 billion annually in lost productivity and healthcare expenses. 📊💰 🤔Let us stop... 🆘 Normalising burnout and exhaustion. 🆘 Demanding absolute and constant availability. 🆘 Celebrating those who sacrifice their personal lives for work. It is time to build organisations where... ✔️ Mental health is a PRIORITY. ✔️ A culture of respect and empathy is promoted. ✔️ A work-life balance is encouraged. ⚖️ ✔️ Teamwork and collaboration are recognised and valued. 🤝 What can we do? ☑ Employees: Do not hesitate to say "no" when feeling overwhelmed. Communicate your needs to your supervisors and seek support when necessary. 💬 ☑ Employers and leaders: Invest in wellness programmes for your employees. Research shows that organisations prioritising employee well-being can see a 21% increase in productivity. 📈 Foster a culture of balance and create a safe and healthy work environment. ☑ Corporate clients: Avoid demanding immediate results. Assess your priorities and understand that behind an "URGENT" request is a team that may be suffering in silence. 🔍 💡 What does this have to do with marketing? Marketing is fundamentally about people. One of the most effective strategies is the genuine recommendation and recognition of your team for the fair and humane treatment they receive. You cannot expect your team to treat your clients well if they are not treated with dignity themselves. 🌟 👉 Remember, the mental health is a concern for ALL of us. Together, we can build a more humane and equitable workplace. 🤗 Have you experienced a similar situation? How did you recover? The recent surge in work-related deaths in India isn't just alarming—it's a wake-up call we can't ignore. Did you know? • Over 30% of Indians report feeling extremely stressed at work • Several high-profile cases of cardiac arrests in young professionals have made headlines recently As someone who's been both an employee and an employer, this hits close to home. We're facing a crisis, and it's time we talk about it. Here's my take: 1. The "hustle culture" is killing us—literally. Working 80+ hour weeks isn't a badge of honor; it's a health hazard. 2. Mental health isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. Companies need to prioritize employee well-being, not just productivity. 3. Technology should liberate us, not chain us to our desks. We need to rethink how we use tech in the workplace. 4. Success shouldn't come at the cost of our lives. It's time to redefine what "success" means in our culture. ………….. We need a cultural shift. Here's what I propose: 📍Mandatory breaks and vacation time 📍Mental health support as part of employee benefits 📍Training for managers on recognizing burnout 📍Flexible work arrangements that respect work-life balance Remember, a burned-out team isn't a productive team. As leaders, it's our responsibility to foster a healthier work environment. What steps is your organization taking to address work-related stress? Share below—let's learn from each other and be part of the solution. P.S. If you're struggling with work-related stress, please reach out for help. Recent events in the Indian corporate world have shed light on the plight of employees and their well-being in the country. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. The question is, is Burnout a sign of failure of an employee, or is it a failure of organisations? A survey by Gallop found the issue's root cause to be unmanageable workload, lack of role clarity, unreasonable time pressure, and unfair treatment, all of which clearly shows how it’s up to the organisations to change their ways of working. At In Diverse Company, we believe in creating cultures where everyone can thrive, where a company has: ✔️𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 where employees are not expected to be available 24/7 and where everyone's time and personal life is valued. ✔️𝗔 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 by hiring more employees, reassigning work, and scheduling regular one-on-ones. ✔️𝗔 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 that is not looked down upon, as this can boost employee morale and allow them time to reset physically and mentally. We must understand that employee well-being is one of the strongest pillars to creating productive companies. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸-𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. #MentalHealth #WorkplaceBurnout
