Distributed energy at a meaningful scale will be critical to meet the energy demands driven by electrification. However, many DER systems today are too complex and expensive, limiting their growth. The below report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights several key strategies to unlock the potential of distributed energy resources, including: - Battery energy storage systems - Electric vehicles as energy storage (V2G and V2X) - Demand response - Ancillary grid services - VPPs Check out the report to learn more about how we can deploy DERs cheaper, faster, and more effectively. #ders #distributedenergy #microgrids #electrification

INTERESTING: "The Pilot, also known for customers as the Flexible Pricing Rate Pilot, is designed to demonstrate the CalFUSE dynamic pricing concept which has been developed to provide a near term solution to address the longer-term challenges associated with the State’s energy transformation, help integrate renewables, reduce GHG emissions, improve system reliability, and reduce or minimize cost of service." Given that we are now curtailing renewables in peak afternoon periods and charging EVs in the middle of the night when there's no solar at all or in the middle of a heat wave with 30GW of A/C ... might be good to have more intelligence built into rates.... put all that smart technology to work to set appliance and charging to lowest cost periods when it's possible to wait. https://lnkd.in/d-3BFZft

Energy and Insurance - two of the least sexy line items buried on a P&L. Maybe so, but unless you review and "control" them to the best of your ability, they will likely continue to creep out of control. At least with energy, you can make your own. With the right partners to guide and assist, the transition to energy sovereignty can be fairly painless. Insurance...not so much (without massive "multiples of risk" in captive capital). What your goals - lower energy costs, resiliency from business disruption, accomplishing your sustainability goals, more? A virtual power plant is a system of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and battery storage, which can be bundled with each other and with other communicating energy saving devices, like smart thermostats, to control usage and demand levels across many locations. This relieves stress on the energy grid in specific locations and can be used to sell energy back to the electrical grid.

Why is energy storage becoming more and more important in the energy market? First, energy storage can effectively solve the time mismatch problem of energy supply and demand. With the popularization of new energy vehicles, the demand for charging has surged, and traditional charging stations are facing the problems of difficulty in increasing capacity and high investment costs. Energy storage systems can reduce the operating costs of charging stations and improve economic benefits by charging during off-peak hours and discharging during peak hours. Second, energy storage helps to improve the power quality and operating efficiency of charging stations. The energy storage system equipped with a charging station can improve the power quality, reduce problems such as low power factor and harmonics, and ensure that the charging station can operate normally under various conditions. In addition, the energy storage system can also achieve multi-energy complementarity and improve the operating efficiency and stability of the charging station through optimized configuration and scheduling management. Third, the energy storage system can reduce operating costs and increase revenue sources. Through the time-of-use electricity price strategy, the energy storage system can charge during off-peak hours and discharge during peak hours, thereby reducing electricity bills. At the same time, the energy storage system can also participate in power demand side response, assist the power grid in peak and frequency regulation, earn subsidies, and even participate in power spot market transactions to increase revenue sources. Finally, energy storage technology helps promote the development and utilization of new energy. With the large-scale access to renewable energy, especially wind and solar energy, the balance of supply and demand in the power system faces challenges. Energy storage systems can store energy when there is an excess supply of energy, release energy when demand peaks, balance the power grid, and improve energy utilization efficiency. Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are a powerful tool in modern energy management. By aggregating Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) like solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and even electric vehicles, VPPs create a unified, flexible energy resource that can be controlled and dispatched just like a traditional power plant. #powerplant #digital #energy

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are revolutionizing the way we approach energy management, particularly in the context of renewable energy sources. By effectively addressing the intermittency and non-dispatchable nature of renewables, BESS not only enhances grid stability but also offers robust solutions for peak demand scenarios—especially during those hot summer nights when air conditioning loads skyrocket. Traditional methods like investing in new distribution and power transformers to meet temporary spikes in demand often result in negative ROI, as these assets are underutilized for most of the year. In contrast, integrating BESS with decentralized solar solutions—whether rooftop, ground-mounted, or floating—provides a dual advantage: it ensures uninterrupted power supply during peak hours while also capitalizing on price arbitrage. By storing energy during low-cost periods and discharging it when demand (and prices) peak, businesses can realize significant savings and operational efficiency. Moreover, as we shift towards smarter energy systems, industrial and commercial energy storage will play a crucial role in the development of regional smart microgrids and virtual power plants. This transition not only optimizes power system regulation and demand-side coordination but also empowers users to navigate the increasingly dynamic electricity market. By harnessing the peak-shifting and valley-filling capabilities of energy storage, companies can mitigate cost fluctuations and even generate additional revenue through market transactions. The future of energy storage in the industrial and commercial sectors looks promising, and as we continue to innovate and invest in these technologies, we pave the way for a more sustainable and efficient energy landscape. Let's embrace the potential of BESS to transform our energy systems for the better! ⚡🌱 #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #BatteryStorage #SmartGrids #EnergyEfficiency #BESS #lithiumionbatteries #solarenergy #evcharging #photovoltaics #renewableenergy #microgrids #greenenergy #ESS

I'm excited to listen to this one later! Hey Tim Montague we should chat about carbon removal and smart grids some time. I've done a lot of research about integrating ecological restoration with carbon removal and clean energy infrastructure. I love the idea of biochar being produced with regenerative agriculture on brownfields with Enhance Rock Weathering and phytomining. Flash Joule Heating can be a demand response load that converts biochar to graphene and can also be used to refine electronics waste to valuable metals. The solar recycling industry can play a large role in balancing the grid and providing alternative sources of materials that typically come from mines. graphite/graphene is a major ingredient in batteries and can be sourced from biomass grown with agrivoltaics. Rather than corn ethanol for ICE vehicles we can restore prairie with rotational grazing and occasional harvest to produce biochar along with other agricultural waste streams to produce graphite/graphene for batteries. Lots of other uses for graphene like quantum computers and more. The future is looking bright 🌻😎
