>>One year has passed since the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur that took everyone by surprise. While that small state was no stranger to conflict and strife, the unusually violent actions, and the scale of it, together with the apparent ineffectiveness of the state machinery to quell the violence or apprehend the perpetrators remained unexplained. >>In my book 'On A Clear Day You Can See India' published by Harper Collins and published more than 10 years ago, I had presented a collection of anecdotal accounts of my days in that state as a young IAS officer. These accounts were a meditation on the idea of India, as issues of diversity and ethnicity and conflict were always lurking just below the apparently calm surface. An insurgency movement was in progress for many decades, but even in what today appear to be the distant 1970s and 1980s, solutions always appeared to be within the grasp of the authorities as well as contending parties. >>In the epilogue of that book, I had mused that Manipur provides a laboratory to test ideas on resolving ethnic conflict that could then be applied on a larger scale in other parts of India. I had hoped that the authorities in Imphal and Delhi would be ceaselessly trying out new ideas in an effort to bring about peace and harmony among communities. >>Unfortunately that does not seem to have happened, and instead we appear to be witnessing a different approach based on further sharpening the divide between groups in society, with the state machinery playing a far from helpful role. This kind of test experiment should never be expanded to other parts of India, as the results will strain the fabric of nationhood. #nation #india #diversity #manipur Souvik RoyShalini WarrierDr. Tejaswini Mulay (She/Her)Pradip PhanjoubamParan BalakrishnanRajesh NairPushpendra Rai

Reflections on turning 30 - Chapter Three —— I was 26 when I met my partner Kabeer Singh while we were both studying music production at The Media Tribe - Institute of Sound Engineering & Music Production It was a time of blissful collaboration, lots of songwriting and producing and a lot of deliberation on what we wanted to change in the music industry. Here’s what we both felt: 1. We wanted to see more women in production and engineering (basically on the technical side) 2. We want to implement and embody fair practices in the music industry - this meant drawing out proper terms and contracts with whoever we were collaborating with - if not direct compensation, we wanted to introduce a revenue-sharing model with anyone who came aboard our various projects 3. We wanted to try something edgy with our songs - push the envelope with quirky, unheard of sounds, bold lyrics and unconventional sonic choices This resulted in our first proper collaboration together in 2021 - “Beiraada Nazar” - a traditional ghazal set to electronic music. Beiraada Nazar started out as a commercial project - we were trying to set music to an existing fashion film but it didn’t work out - and we loved the song enough to release it with a fashion film of our own. Pranav Vanmali graciously came onboard as the film director and editor. We borrowed some lovely chikankari outfits from a label called "Rooh" by sangeeta vyas Aniket Gundewar played Indian slide guitar on the track while Vaibhav Duratkar played tabla (which we also layered with electronic tabla and more beats) I co-produced the track with Kabeer and Aman Moroney was kind and patient enough to mentor us throughout the whole process. Here’s how the music video turned out: https://lnkd.in/dKwXjZEx More to continue in later posts… #music #musiceducation #musicproducer #ghazal #electronicmusic #electro #pop #Urdu #workethic #soundengineering #musicstudio #contracts #legalterms #copyrights #intellectualproperty

First milestone, achieved so soon. A non-pop music still reached 10K+ views so fast. Many have asked me this: Why didn't you play Tabla in music, we were expecting you to play in video? Of course, this thought will come in mind because I am a student of Tabla and till now many of you have seen me in performances so when this music is being made through me, I should definitely project myself as a Tabla artist and in fact, it is good to get featured on branded music label like Zee Music Company as Tabla artist as it would make boost my exposure. Right from my Gurus to friends to anyone who knows me personally, asked this. So, here is the answer. There are a few things in life that one must do for a higher cause. Unnecessarily, no addition or subtraction should be done irrespective of the fame it brings to you. Music is made up of melody & rhythm. According to the philosophy of music, it is a combination of Shankar & Parvati. Shiva brings energy and Parvati brings emotions. This Aarti being of female divine, I only wanted to keep it very melodious and meditative. Just Tabla or drum has not been played but it is in rhythm only, we maintained it using the metronome. I wanted to make a piece of music which can give you so much peace and it is like bedtime Ma ki Lori, listening to which you can sleep peacefully being the lap of mother. If you put rhythms predominantly, you can't sleep. It energies you. So, we have kept Parvati part of music only in our music so that you can feel like the lap of your mother. Undoubtedly, one can afford to travel in business class of the best airline or get a room in a luxurious resort but none can replace lap of mother that's why no rhythm only melody. I have not made this for any money or fame's sake. Yes, I could have taken my fee as BITS-Pilani funded this project but not a penny was taken by me and in fact, we have committed in writing to donate the royalty we receive from this music (whatever, I don't know now) back to BITS Pilani. See the coincidence, I only wanted to keep Parvati part of music which is melody. It has been Sung by Shambhavi Gautam, which is other name of Parvati, for Jag Janani means mother to the world और इस दुनिया में मुझे लाने वाली मेरी मम्मी का नाम भी actual में शारदा ही है। Name of this temple is Sharda Peeth. And myself Shanker, was fully involved but kept aside from playing music. I didn't want Shankar part which is rhythms predominantly in this music. Isn't it a beautiful coincidence? It would be my biggest service to society if you feel that like sleeping in the lap of your mother for 7.5 mins. And in reality, I have got everything because of Ma because ये चमक ये दमक फुलवन में महक, सब कुछ सरकार तुम्हीं से है :) Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani BITSAA International Prof. V Ramgopal Rao Sudhirkumar V Barai Zee Music Company https://lnkd.in/dusqznJY

RAKSHABANDHAN? Rakshabandhan, a festival symbolizing the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, is a day of celebration across India. Traditionally, sisters tie a rakhi around their brothers' wrists, symbolizing love, protection, and commitment. Over time, this bond has extended beyond siblings, with friends and even acquaintances tying rakhis to signify their mutual respect and care. Yet, as we celebrate this beautiful festival, we cannot ignore the stark contrast between these values and the harsh reality of the society we live in. Today, we find ourselves in a country that, on one hand, rejoices in festivals like Rakshabandhan, Durga Puja, and Navratri, celebrating the divine feminine and familial bonds. On the other hand, this same country witnesses unimaginable horrors—rapes of young girls, brutal attacks on women, and heinous crimes that defy humanity. Just recently, we marked Independence Day, a day meant to celebrate our freedom and progress. But what kind of independence do we truly have in a land where safety is a luxury, and justice often feels out of reach? We live in a society where a pregnant elephant is mercilessly killed, where women and girls face violence daily, and where even doctors, who are supposed to be revered, become victims of heinous crimes. In such a world, what is the significance of celebrating Rakshabandhan? Did those who commit such crimes not have sisters? Did they never experience the love and protection that this festival embodies? These festivals, meant to bring us together and remind us of our values, seem hollow when we consider the atrocities happening around us. Why do we continue to celebrate independence, Rakshabandhan, and other festivals when the very principles they stand for are violated daily? It's time to reflect on the true meaning of these celebrations and question the society we have become. Can we really celebrate when so many are denied the very rights and protections that these festivals symbolize? #LinkedIn #JUSTICE
