What lessons can we learn from global decarbonization efforts? Yesterday, Cécile Tuil, our SVP Customers & Engagement, shared RATP Dev’s insights and expertise at the News Tank Mobilités Colloquium. Industry experts Jean-Marc Zulesi, Antoine Colas and Cécile discussed decarbonization and the future of public transport with Vincent Pons. Here are some highlights! 🚊 Public transport, including thermal buses, is inherently more environmentally friendly than individual cars, even those that are electric. The ultimate environmental adversary in terms of both carbon emissions and traffic congestion is single-occupancy vehicles. 💡 But here's the catch: financing is the key to help progress sustainable public transport. More riders create more revenue, paving the way for increased investment, improved service and newer infrastructure — in turn driving up ridership and triggering a virtuous cycle. 🌎 Countries around the world demonstrate varying degrees of progress towards decarbonization. From voluntary initiatives to robust regulatory measures, each region and city has its own approach. 🤝 Collaboration is paramount. By fostering partnerships between public authorities, operators, financial institutions and other stakeholders, we can better navigate the complex landscape of sustainable transport. We've teamed up with Enterprise Rent-A-Car & National Car Rental in one of the UK #construction sector's first pilot to test the use of electric vans on three major sites! Data-capturing technology tracked usage to inform EV deployment and viability on construction sites. Urban mobility lunch with Kristine Kvalbein Fjetland, Head of Business Development at HYKE - Hydrolift Smart City Ferries! Expect for the normal this and that 🙃, we also had some interesting discussions about the future of electric vessels, waterway mobility and sustainability. As more operators transition to electric, one of the key challenges for operators of lightweight vessels is dealing with the operational downtime caused by charging. Because lightweight vessels need lightweight batteries, right? And lightweight batteries need a loong charging time❗😴 And what if you are a water taxi operator who has decided to buy an electric vessel and suddenly sees uptime and revenue drop from 100% to 65%? 📉 Is that incentivizing? Will that encourage more operators to go green voluntarily? Many operators are currently considering building extra vessels to cover the “gaps” in uptime – a huge cost driver. In any case, swapping batteries will always be a more cost-efficient alternative than swapping boats. ✅ The potential to maximize uptime is a game changer for the entire maritime mobility sector, from water taxis to larger vessels. It’s exciting to see how this technology could transform the way we use our waterways. Looking forward to what's next! 😎
