“Nobody will hire you” This is what my mom said when I got my first tattoo. She’s not wrong. Most people hide their tattoos during interviews fearing that they might not get hired. For me, things were different. I have- 8 tattoos, an unconventional hairstyle, 10 piercings, and (at most times) a funky hair colour. So….basically…I am not really an ideal “job seeker”.   But the truth is that sincerity and hard work do not have any defined appearance. Because despite my unconventional appearance I have managed to - - Get a job and - Get promoted  - Build an organic community of over 1.4 million  - Work with some of the biggest brands I've seen judgements translating into appreciation once they have seen my work. I have had DMs where young girls have told me how they can express themselves unapologetically and appear in a way that is authentic to them because they look up to me. Through this post, I don’t want someone to hold back. Finding a job is already hard without adding a superficial factor. So, let’s try not to be so judgemental. Headline: Alligator in a Job Hunt: Snapping at the Heels of Ghosting Ever felt like a hungry alligator, diving into the job market, only to be left high and dry? You apply, you interview, and then...poof! The company vanishes, leaving you hanging like a wet towel on a clothesline. It's like they've dropped off the face of the earth, and you're chasing a mirage. And when you finally manage to get a response, it's often as helpful as a chocolate teapot. I'm hearing from more candidates than you'd expect that this frustrating phenomenon is all too common. It's time to call out this ghosting behaviour. We're not just resumes on paper; we're human beings with hopes, dreams, and a whole lot of talent. We deserve better. I remember when I applied for a fundraising job and I was told I'd hear back in the New Year. I finally had to call the office, someone covered the phone receiver (badly) while someone shouted across the room, "Anyone got an update on that job?" And guess what? They'd already filled it! Talk about a classic ghosting move. It's still happening! Let's make some noise and demand respect from employers. I am so disheartened and So frustrated with the job industry. I was let go as a manager of a small hair removal business back in February, because I was told that I was not happy when I was never asked what the problem was. I drove almost 2 hours in traffic for a year and a half everyday with 1 day off per week dedicating everything I had into this position. Finally being recognized for my hard work, leadership and teamwork skills. I was promised that when a position was to become available closer to home I could move. That did not happen and was simply let go for “ Budget cuts” I was too product seller for over a year! Making $3000 per month just on my own for this business and not including my store goal and that still wasn’t enough. I left and decided to go back to school and pursue my degree and finish what I started years ago, just to get into the bigger Beauty Brand companies. Making sure I obtained all of the proper training I needed to get into a Beauty Brand. I applied and applied and applied for months and got the interviews, but someone was always more qualified than myself. I gained a mentor we broke down my resume a million and one times and still nothing. I had to do something so I started my own business providing hair removal services and that has been so hard! Gaining clients has been my hardest challenge yet. I’ve had 2 jobs in between with one letting me go because of my availability not being open to their standard even when I offered to change it to their needs. It was still a no. I then found another position at another med spa and today they let me go because there no clients coming in and I was told i was not useful because I am not a medical assistant. I am with ends my back is against the wall and I can seem to do is cry every night knowing that how did I get here. How did this happen. I’m so dissatisfied and disappointed in myself. I thought i was doing what I needed to do for any Beauty Brand to notice me. I simply just did not qualify. I’m such a hard worker and willing to give my all that I do not know what to do. This is creating such a hold on my heart and messing with my mind. I am always applying to different jobs in any and everything I could find and seek. I try to remain humble and hopeful but now I am at the point where I have become desperate and I don’t know how I am going to afford my bills.

Let’s talk about Ghost Jobs and why they don’t bother me. It’s also spooky season, so… topical! Ghost Jobs have been around for a long time. We just didn’t refer to them as Ghost Jobs. My dad used to tell me that companies would post jobs with no intent to hire anyone. They just wanted to see who was out there. Make of that what you will, but I believed him and still do. Anyway, always remember that job hunting is a numbers game. Few people apply to just ONE job and instantly land their dream gig. For every job you apply to, there should be another immediately behind it, and so on. You’ll receive X number of rejections. You’ll get GHOSTED X number of times. Just continue applying until something (hopefully) works out. And don’t be afraid of no ghost!

This weekend, my depression while job hunting hit an all-time low. Almost everyone I know in tech and gaming has been laid off. Some of my friends have moved on to other careers. Some are still looking. It looks pretty bleak out there for everyone. But I couldn’t spend this week worried. An art show had put out a call for entries and I had asked to submit my work to be considered, but I hadn’t submitted anything yet. I had art to create but believing in myself enough to paint after rejection after rejection seemed too daunting. I had heard from a lot of people that they loved my black and white work the best, but as I painted I was crippled with self doubt. Was this piece too simple? Would anyone get it? Was I executing the idea correctly? The same doubts plague me when I’m applying for jobs: do I have all the skills for this role? So many people are out of work - would they pick me out of hundreds of other designers? Do I have the right pieces in my portfolio? Maybe if I tweak this one thing in my resume, they will see my potential. Even with all the self doubt, I am one of the most tenacious person I know when it comes to solving a problem. Instead of being taken over with self down, I painted straight through until the piece was done, and it occurred to me how much this was like my job hunt. I was making a piece for a Moby Dick inspired art show, and hunting for a job in this market feels like searching for a white whale. It’s daunting. Sometimes, terrifying. But we must brave the seas anyway. The result? I had a piece in my first ever open-call art show. I got to go to the reception last night and have my piece next to many other incredible works. And it didn’t feel too simple. It felt just right.

So, I've decided that I am going to do my hair, wear makeup and wear work-ish clothes. It'll make me feel better about myself, and my environment and bring positivity to my job search. I've seen first hand how much being positive can change the outcome of a situation.
