Yesterday, the U.S. EPA finalized a rule to designate two widely used PFAS chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Under the rule, entities are required to immediately report releases of PFOA and PFOS that meet or exceed the reportable quantity of one pound within a 24-hour period.
The announcement from the EPA is a significant step in protecting communities from the dangers of PFAS exposure. It is the latest in a series of actions aimed at addressing PFAS contamination, following the finalization of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation announced just last week.
