So proud to be part of the team of humans who made Orion possible! It has a been a crazy ride and I’m really excited for what the future holds! We believe these are the most advanced AR glasses ever made, and possibly the most challenging consumer electronics device attempted since the smartphone. They pack a massive amount of innovation in a tiny package: Large holographic displays that let you use the real world as your canvas, placing 2D and 3D content and experiences anywhere you want. At approximately 70 degrees, Orion has the largest field of view in the smallest AR glasses form factor. Incredible natural interaction from a seamless combination of voice, eye gaze, and hand tracking with an EMG wristband that lets you swipe, click, and scroll allowing you to stay present in the world and with the people around you. Meta AI can sense and understand the world around you, becoming the ultimate contextual AI assistant to help you connect and create. Unmistakably glasses in both look and feel, with clear lenses and zero wires. Unlike a headset or dark tinted goggles, with Orion we can still see each other’s eyes and expressions. #Orion #ARglasses #meta #Connect24 https://lnkd.in/e7jnDuEk

#Meta announces #Orion #ARglasses.. very impressive vision and worth reading. The vision is to have lightweight glasses vs headsets to create AR experiences that allow communication, expanded digital view of the world and collaboration in AR world... as they call it Holograms in physical world. IMO, if done well, the hollograms overlaying physical world is going to take the "work from home" model to the next level, allowing teams collaboration which has been a challenge for companies. We have more to learn and see as they build the vision and the product which is still not fully baked. This product will be direct competitor to #Applevisionpro massive headset -- I think the light weight glasses seem more adoption friendly... https://lnkd.in/gnjED3QU

NEWS UPADTE: Meta unveils futuristic Orion AR glasses, will let users project digital on real world Meta Orion is a groundbreaking AR device introduced at Meta Connect 2024. Designed to blend digital content with the physical world, it features advanced AI voice assistance, hand-tracking, eye-tracking, and a wrist-based neural interface for brain-signal control. The Orion glasses are equipped with a silicon-carbide architecture that enables holographic projections to seamlessly integrate with real-world visuals, making them a step ahead of previous smart glasses like Ray-Ban. CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the glasses' ability to take over smartphone tasks, boasting the largest field of view in any AR glasses to date. They enable multitasking, large-screen entertainment, and life-sized holograms, all in a lightweight design that resembles regular glasses. The transparent lenses allow for natural face-to-face interactions, making the glasses practical for everyday use. Orion’s integration with Meta AI enhances the user experience. For instance, the glasses can help with tasks such as recipe suggestions based on what’s in your fridge, or allow you to video call while adjusting a calendar. The system includes a neural wristband for control and a wireless puck for full functionality. Meta plans to ship its first commercial AR glasses by 2027, aiming to make this technology a part of daily life. Despite its promising demo, the challenge lies in its practical adoption. Meta also introduced the Quest 3S, an entry-level MR headset. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR 2 Gen 2 chipset, the Quest 3S offers double the graphical performance of its predecessor, the Quest 2. Available in 128GB and 256GB variants, priced at $299.99 and $399.99 respectively, the Quest 3S features fresnel lenses, two RGB cameras, and pass-through mode for virtual object interaction. The Quest 3S will launch on October 15, 2024. Meta is discontinuing the Quest 2 and Quest Pro while dropping the price of the Quest 3 to $499.99.

Meta once again teases its revolutionary augmented reality glasses using the term #Hologram. I'm always on alert when Meta uses such generic terms, because the consequences can be disastrous for our market, which is destabilized by the announcement effects of the #mainstream press. That's how we had the "Metaverse" crisis, mixing the wow effect with rapid disappointment after investment in the mini-bubble. They must have learned their lesson, and will be able to keep to a guideline, without offering too many different products at the same time. Because it's also something that needs to be carefully analyzed: consumers aren't yet familiar with the terms #VR, and #Quest3 and #VisionPro have added to the confusion with multiple terms such as #MR (Mixed Reality, often confused with #XR for extented realities, even the whole concept: #VR, #AR, #MR) or spatial computing at Apple . Added to this are the names of technical elements such as #passtrough, etc. If a multitude of new products arrive with new #keywords, the risk is to complicate the overall understanding of these technologies, and to bore the consumer who is tired of not understanding anything. I started working in #VR in 2015, and I've been keeping an international and direct watch with the giants of this industry, and despite 10 years of expertise and précise technological monitoring, I'm getting lost in all the marketing terminology, to differentiate the competition. Anecdote: the term #MR was used by Microsoft in 2018 to differentiate between #VR , a key word referring to #Facebook , and #AR , then used by #Google, #MagicLeaps and #Microsoft itself too, with #Hololens . Microsoft was trying to break into #PCVR and its partnerships with #HP and #Lenovo VR headsets. It didn't last. The term #MR is now being used again by #Meta for the #Quest3 , to keep #AR for its #Rayban glasses. It's getting complicated...

Zuckerberg teased these glasses again on Friday. I believe they will be impressive but still very much a lab-grade prototype. They refer to this as "true AR" presumedly because the virtual content is spatially registered to real world in full 3D. We shall see if they can really do it convincingly without passthrough for alignment. They refer to the glasses as "holographic" because, well... it sounds cool? Seriously, "hologram" is tossed around too loosely (from a physics perspective) for various transmissive head-worn displays. That said, I'd be impressed if they use genuine interference patterns to create their visuals. Regardless, I hope the device is as impressive as Meta claims. If they can show a believable path from today's Ray-Bans to "true AR" in the next few years, it will help maintain their current momentum. It's the difference between their Ray-Bans being a genuine Trojan horse for real AR adoption, or a dead-end or side-road like many other smart-glasses efforts.
