One level below the #multinational country leadership team is where #ceos and other c-suite leaders are least confident about their talent's future readiness. Talent and the top line were the two top #growth goals for 2024 according to members of the Abundium multinational leadership community when we asked them in January this year. This prompted us to look at how multinationals can build talent for tomorrow in this month's #Masterclass with IMD Dean of Asia & Oceania Misiek Piskorski. During our conversation we polled the participants, who were all #CEOs or c-suite leaders, about their confidence at each level in their organisation to be ready for tomorrow. The graph in this post reveals the result. Professor Misiek was not surprised. He said this captures the age old challenge of progressing from technical leadership to people leadership to becoming a leader of leaders. Different skills, mindframes and behaviours are required at each level and organisations don't always assess or develop people for these unique capabilities, instead promoting them based on their competence or confidence at the previous level. The result is many organisations miss the 'hidden gems' Misiek shared. The 'diamonds in the rough'. Companies complain about the #warfortalent not realising the biggest enemy they face may be themselves. Or more accurately, the enemy may be their systems and processes for identifying talent based on yesterday's performance as opposed to developing them to be ready for tomorrow. "The future belongs to those who hear it coming" ~ David Bowie And if there's anyone who needs to hear the future coming, it's the executives running today's organisations. Last Thursday, I had the treat of spending an hour with my friends at Leaders on Demand to talk about strategic foresight and futures thinking to a group of their CXOs. I shared the key concepts of strategic foresight, how it can be used as an antidote to the short-termism that plagues most organisations, some examples of strategic foresight in action, and a few tools from the toolkit. It was a great conversation and we chatted through some big questions about the changes/challenges happening in the world right now, how leaders need to learn to let go of a level of certainty that has got them to where they are today, the cultural challenges and differences of doing this work in Australia compared to other markets, and the trap of failing to 'do' anything with this type of thinking and make the decisions that take this work from theory to impact.
