I have been reading and hearing a lot of people talking about the problem of tool sprawl. Here’s what I think: there are benefits to tool sprawl that we shouldn’t overlook. Think about this: Having a single company providing the whole AppSec wheel could be dangerous. Having the best of breed for the key aspects of your security is critical. You want a company that is good at SAST to do your SAST scans, SCA, DAST, API and so on. You want to know that your findings are the best they can be. You shouldn't have to compromise for poor results. So instead of prioritizing cutting down the number of tools they use, organizations need to focus on ASPM, to have that single pane of glass to see all your information brought together. Aggregating all your parts and pieces gives you the ability to assess and decide what you want to do. In my book, that solves the main issue that people are trying to solve when it comes to tool sprawl. I’m not saying tool sprawl doesn’t have its drawbacks, but I think that having multiple angles and approaches to accomplishing security tasks is key. Having your tools a la carte gives you the freedom to pick the best of breed in each category. I understand it can get expensive, but what is the cost of a security incident? What do you think? Is tool sprawl as critical as many people think? Or do you think I have a point? Either way - let’s talk! As always, stay secure friends. #ToolSprawl #AppSec #ASPM
