The mercury crossed 40 degrees in Mumbai today but IMD predicts an above normal monsoon this year. One hopes that IMD will be right this time around but past anecdotal experience doesn't inspire confidence. But then the donkeys in Mumbai (and Delhi and aboard expensive aircraft) don't bray reliably about monsoon either, so IMD it will have to be. Water distress in rural India is already acute; Mumbai's reservoir water levels are at a 3 year low. Can't help but wonder what we would do should monsoons fail. After all, major civilizations including the Indus Valley declined due to a 200-year monsoon hiatus (see link in comments). How many years of monsoon drought will we last? Three? Five? Ten? What will we do after the reservoirs dry up, and then the wells? Or will the seas drown us?

Cyclone 'Remal' has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is expected to make landfall between West Bengal's Sagar Island and Bangladesh's Khepupara on Sunday night. The cyclone is the first in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season, with wind speeds of 110 to 120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph. Coastal areas of Bengal and Bangladesh are on high alert, with warnings of heavy rainfall and storm surges. Authorities have issued alerts and advisories, while fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. The Sundarbans mangrove forest and climate change impact are highlighted, with scientists linking cyclone intensity to warmer sea surface temperatures. Substantial changes in the land cover and land use in Bengaluru over half a century. The two large water bodies that run east-west, have shrunk. The current drought in Karnataka and water scarcity in Bengaluru and other cities, calls for urgent measures to restore and preserve these lakes and water bodies.
