During a keynote I delivered last night for Bishop Collins Chartered Accountants on the topic of 'How to Become an Employer of Choice' I shared this core difference: Common business practice follows these priorities: 1️⃣ Keep the shareholders and stakeholders happy. This means focusing on profit, productivity, and performance above all else. Often at the sacrifice of humanistic principles like wellbeing. 2️⃣ Keep your customers and clients happy. This means "the customer is always right", even when they're being a jerk and having a negative impact on your staff. 3️⃣ Maybe, if there's enough time and resources leftover, try to keep staff happy. Unfortunately this often means half hearted, and half baked, people & culture strategies that don't make a measurable difference. This status quo is why 72% of employed Australians aren't happy at work But Employers of Choice do the exact opposite of business as usual. Their priorities look like this: 1️⃣ Maximise our employee experience and staff happiness. They invest in supporting, upskilling, and developing their people. They know that their people are their greatest competitive advantage and their greatest asset. 2️⃣ Equip our people to deliver an outstanding customer experience. They know that when they as a workplace exceed the expectations of their staff, their staff exceed the expectations of their customers. 3️⃣ Reap the rewards. Happier staff leads to reduced costs in the form of lost productivity, turnover, recruitment, and absenteeism. They also produce higher sales and performance compared to unhappy staff. And happy customers leads to more repeat business and higher referrals. All of which has a remarkably positive impact on your profitability. If this resonates with you I'd love your help sharing this concept. The more leaders who embrace it, the happier our workplaces will become 😃 ___ PS; My name is Declan Edwards.
