🌍 Highlights from Algae Europe 2024! 🌿 A big shoutout to Jonathan Forbes Forbes, our LCA Consultant, for his incredible presentation at Algae Europe 2024 in Athens! 🎤🇬🇷 His talk, "Assessment of the Brilliant Planet Carbon Dioxide Removal System," provided a deep dive into Decerna’s Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA) based due diligence of the microalgae based Brilliant Planet carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) system, which is based in #Morrocco. It is vital that all carbon capture projects have appropriate LCA due diligence to ensure that we are certain they genuinely are taking carbon from the ecosphere, and this is something Decerna undertakes for a wide range of carbon capture clients. The work was undertaken using openLCA, which provides a transparent platform, ideal for due diligence projects. We followed the European Comissions #LCA4CCU methodology, to ensure comparability with other LCA studies of carbon capture. 👏 Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged with his insights! Thank you to the event organisers AlgaEurope, and to all our partners who supported this work. #LifeCycleAssessment #ACV #sustainability #carboncapture #CCUS #CCS #CDR #DAC

Join us at the Nordic CCUS Expo 2024, organized by KLIMPO in collaboration with our partners Sysav and E.ON Sverige. Exhibit and showcase your contributions to the CCUS value chain and join our VIP dinner! In the Nordic countries, there are approximately 270 facilities that emit more than 100,000 tonnes of #CO2 annually, resulting in a total of over 230 million tons of CO2 emissions. However, the region is unique in its high proportion of biogenic CO2 emissions, with Sweden and Finland leading the way with around 60 % and 40 % of their CO2 emissions originating from biofuels, respectively. The CO2 storage potential in the Nordic region is estimated at 212 Gt, with 209 Gt related to offshore storage and 3 Gt to onshore storage sites. Join us on this remarkable journey to expand the emerging #CCUS industry and make a difference for our planet! Showcase your contributions to the CCUS value chain by exhibiting at the Nordic CCUS Expo! 💚 #CCS #CCU #PtX #BioCCU #BioCCS #Co2Capture #Climatepositive #BECCS

CCU EVENT I Webinar for CO₂ Value Europe Members on the Role of CCU in the Path towards a Climate-Neutral EU In collaboration with Bioenergia, the Bioenergy Association of Finland, we are organising a webinar for our members on Tuesday, the 29th of October, from 10-11 am (CET). The webinar will deep dive into CO₂ Value Europe’s first-of-a-kind quantitative assessment (https://lnkd.in/d-XTrJHv ) of the contribution of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) towards climate neutrality in the EU. The report, launched in January 2024, is the result of a thorough two-year exercise conducted in collaboration with international academic, industrial, technological, and economic experts on CCU, inside and outside our membership. The multidisciplinary study aims to understand and quantify the potential of CCU but also to describe the main parameters and key uncertainties associated with the upscaling of these technologies. The event is open to CO₂ Value Europe and Bioenergia members only. If you are a member and wish to participate, please feel free to contact our colleague Lara Tottolo at [email protected] for further information.

This week we will be exploring the three main outcomes of the UP-TO-ME project and how they will positively impact the global environment and society. The 1st outcome focuses on the maritime industry. The UP-TO-ME project aims to convert decentralised CO2 point-sources to production sites for renewable fuels, specifically methanol. This clean fuel will be used for marine vessels within the maritime industry across the globe. Stay tuned to our social media for the 2nd outcome of the UP-TO-ME project. Happy to share our latest open access research paper in which we assessed impacts and scale-up potentials for #EmissionAbatement through prescribed burning and #IntegratedFireManagement (IFM) in the Brazilian Cerrado! The Brazilian Cerrado is not only a biodiversity hotspot but also plays a crucial role in climate regulation. By understanding the implications of prescribed burning and integrated fire management, we aim to contribute to the broader discourse on fire management as a #NatureBasedSolution. Some key findings from this study: 👉 Brazilian environmental authorities and research institutions created their own IFM success story by reducing high intensity mid/late dry season fires through prescribed burning in the early dry season 👉 Fuel fragmentation (biomass that can be consumed by fires) led to a 62% reduction in burned areas in the IFM period 2014–2019 👉 We conservatively estimate an emission abatement potential of 1,085,764 tCO2e/y (CH4 & N2O) when scaling IFM up to all protected areas of the Cerrado 👉 IFM also resulted in a carbon sequestration effect in living biomass, since fuel loads increased with average accumulations of 0.29 t/ha over the six years period 👉 digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification #dMRV systems using high resolution satellite data are key to detect more of the smaller burned areas and to prove the effect of IFM-related GHG emission abatement projects I would like to especially thank my co-authors who have been involved in the implementation of operational IFM for many years. I look forward to further discussions and collaborations in this important field. For those interested, the paper is published in the journal Environmental Research Letters: https://lnkd.in/eXYkXQVZ #EnvironmentalScience #Cerrado #FireManagement #EmissionAbatement #Copernicus Photo: Anja A.
