ADIPEC marked a significant milestone for the OGDC: our first-ever gathering of the CEOs from our signatory companies. It was a powerful moment to reflect on the progress we've made in our inaugural year and to discuss our key priorities for 2025. The work we’re doing together to accelerate decarbonization underscores a simple truth: addressing the climate challenge requires collaboration from companies around the world that can contribute a range of experiences, capabilities, stakeholders and national circumstances. We are proud of what we've accomplished so far and there is much more to achieve in the next chapter of our journey. Insights from #WCEF2024, the World Circular Economy Forum held in Brussels this week. I was able to follow several online accelerating sessions through the livestream platform, including the "Material demand and solutions for the energy transition" session. Key actors from the United Nations, International Resource Panel (IRP), ICMM, UCL, among others, shared their insights. "The material footprint is dangerously underdiscussed," says Janez Potocnik, former EU Commissioner for the Environment. While climate change discussions often focus on carbon emissions, Potocnik highlights the importance of discussing material usage, waste output, and human society's growth, all of which impact the Earth's biosphere. Another key takeaway from the presentation is that effective climate change solutions require a combination of supply-side solutions (carbon management, land/water/energy/materials, and circular economy) and demand-side solutions (ecosystem services, environmental sinks), and nature-based solutions. I'm proud that our Sustainability, Energy and Climate Change team at WSP is fostering all these solutions to our partners. #sustainability #energytransition #circulareconomy #circularity #wsp WSP in the U.S.

"The buildings we occupy, the roads, bridges, tunnels we use, the factories we build, the universities and hospitals we frequent, the energy and water infrastructure we need; all together they account for a massive 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions." The built environment plays a significant role in driving climate change, necessitating urgent action to reduce emissions in the sector. However, this requires a holistic approach which engages all stakeholders across the value chain 🤝 WBCSD's Market Transformation Action Agenda (MTAA) outlines 11 strategic actions and 3 key levers to overcome market barriers and incentivize low-carbon solutions in the built environment: 🌲 Lever 1: Alignment behind Whole Life Carbon (WLC) accounting. 💰 Lever 2: Integrating carbon cost in decision-making. 🏗️ Lever 3: Transforming supply and demand dynamics. As #COP29 unfolds, WBCSD urges stakeholders across the built environment value chain to contribute to the MTAA implementation and join this collaborative effort to create a sustainable future for the sector. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recently released two insightful reports in February, shedding light on a critical area of climate action: Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM). In simpler terms, BVCM is about taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not just within a company's own operations, but also outside of them, including initiatives that remove or reduce emissions across the globe. SBTi is encouraging businesses to broaden their efforts beyond their immediate supply chains to tackle climate change more effectively. They're advocating for these external actions to represent a significant portion of a company's emission reduction strategy, suggesting these efforts should at least account for over half of their total emission reductions. Moreover, SBTi emphasizes the importance of having these claims independently verified, ensuring credibility and real impact. At CarbonLeap, this endorsement from SBTi aligns perfectly with our vision. We see a clear shift towards embracing carbon insetting through a book and claim model, a move we believe will fast-track the decarbonization of supply chains. The growing recognition of this method by industry leaders is a promising sign. It signifies that the adoption of book and claim models is on the horizon, paving the way for a more impactful approach to achieving net-zero emissions. #CarbonInsetting #ClimateAction #Sustainability #NetZeroAmbition #Impact

WATCH: In this episode of Climate Chronicles by EKI, our Vice President - Business Development, Siddhant Gupta talks about the details of the new policy for high integrity voluntary carbon markets by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris-led U.S. government. VCMs can significantly impact climate change but face challenges in ensuring credit integrity. Recent inconsistencies in methodologies have raised transparency concerns. New principles aim to establish robust standards, improve market functioning, and ensure fairness, enhancing VCM credibility and effectiveness in combating climate change. Last week, Eoin attended The Gloucestershire Business Show. He sat on the panel for the ‘Climate, Business & The Future Workshop and Forum’ joining the crucial conversation about business decarbonisation. Eoin said, “It was fascinating to see how the debate has moved on. A few years ago the focus on the forum was how businesses can make a start in measuring and reducing their emissions. This year we had a really thoughtful discussion about some of the key challenges business face in decarbonisation; including the challenges of recording data for accurate carbon calculation and of engaging suppliers in the effort.” #climateaction #sustainability #netzero #carbonneutral #goclimatepositive #gbs24

Finally able to catch my breath after an exhilarating hashtag #ClimateWeekNYC My highlight? Puro.earth's CDR Summit - high quality panels, the whole community in a single room, and a goldmine of insights on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). Here were my top 5 takeaways: 🌍CDR and VCM Still in Infancy: Huge potential for market infrastructure development to 1) enable the next tranche of buyers beyond the biggest corporates 2) accelerate climate startups through alignment/consolidation of standards, streamlined DMRV, and consolidated financing levers. 🌍 2024 A Temporary Buyer Slowdown: Suppliers who innovate and persevere through this demand/financing challenge will thrive when the market rebounds. 🌍 Quality Uncertainty: Buyers still not sure "What good looks like" across CDR projects. Ongoing efforts across the industry are crucial in rebuilding VCM trust. 🌍 MRV Challenges: MRV can account for 40-60% of CDR credit costs🤯 Streamlining the 100s of numerous, similar frameworks is essential. 🌍 United Front is Key: Players across the VCM stack promoting differentiation over competitors is key and natural, but collaboration and maintaining a united front remains vital to bolster overall trust in the VCM. What were your key insights on CDR and VCM from #ClimateWeekNYC? #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #VCM #Sustainability

SBTi Targets approved ✅ I'm excited to announce Cooper Parry's Net-Zero and Near-Term targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As the UK's largest B Corp accountancy firm, taking care of our planet is a top priority 🌎 Especially as the latest climate science from the IPCC shows that while there is still a chance to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, we’re dangerously close to going beyond that threshold. That is why we're committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and have already taken big steps towards our FY2045 net-zero strategy. We will update our stakeholders on our progress through the annual impact report (next one will be published early in the new year) and we're also working on a 'Net Zero Journey: lessons learned and targets' that will be a comprehensive material on our net zero journey. Past and future. Let's make a greener future together. 🪴 If you feel inspired and want to see how we can help you, click here: https://lnkd.in/d8sqUX8s #NetZero #Environment #Emissions
