Did you know that your local sewer treatment plant is probably the largest user of electricity in your community? In most towns, wastewater treatment accounts for more than 1/3 of the entire municipal electric bill. We can reduce electricity consumption at treatment plants. And if we reduce electric consumption we can also reduce our carbon foot print. The energy we need is already coming into our facilities. If we tool up correctly we can capture the thermal and chemical engery contained in the wastewater stream itself. The heat and biogas in a typical wastewater stream has more than 10x the energy necessary to convey, process, filter, and clean the water. We can clean our water without polluting our air, but we have to make changes to do so.
