Founders pay a high price for overworking. We glorify the grind. Even brag about it. But here’s the truth: If you’re still working 50-hour weeks after 5 years in business, you’re in danger. It means your business: - depends on you - isn't systematized - isn't ready to scale Working harder means going faster in the wrong direction. The destination? Burn out. It looks like this: - You snap at people - You make bad decisions - You try to escape the stress Working harder just creates a bigger trap. It's time to rethink your strategy. Exhaustion, stress and frustration are signals that your business can’t run without you. Overworking won’t get you where you want to go. It just makes you tired. Keep this in mind: The more hours you work, the less valuable your business becomes. Because no one wants to buy a business that is killing the founder. And you don’t want to own one either. Instead, start thinking of yourself as an investor and turn your business into an asset. Systematize your business so it can run without you. Because then you have options: Keep it and scale, hire someone else to run it for you, or exit when you’re ready. That’s the ultimate freedom.
"Working harder means going faster in the wrong direction." is a brilliant line Debbie King! It also usually keeps business owners from doing the thing that have a bigger impact. If they are stuck down in the details they aren't out there being the face of the company and championing the core values. Thanks for this insightful post!
Debbie King I’ve definitely been at the “glorify the grind” place. Then I realized I was on a brink of burnout and needed a new strategy. Now I seek work life balance and set healthy boundaries. There are times as a business owner I need to step up and put in long hours for a week or a month but I am much better at setting boundaries for my time.
I know way to well the price Founders pay when they overwork. I am actually trying to scale back because it take a physical and mental toll on you.
Insightful post, Debbie. It’s crucial for founders to recognize that overworking often signals deeper issues within the business. By systematizing operations and stepping back, we can transform our ventures into sustainable assets. This shift not only enhances value but also fosters personal well-being. Embracing a strategic mindset can lead to greater freedom and growth.
Systems and automation...that's where a business should be after 5 years.
I believe a founder should prepare for his FREEDOM early on in the business journey.
So true! Overworking is a red flag, not a badge of honor. It’s time to systematize and create a business that thrives without burning you out. Focus on building an asset, not just a job. The ultimate freedom comes when your business can run without you.
Great advice
"Overworking won't get you where you want to go." Hear, hear Debbie King! Addition can't scale; multiplication can. Creating more leaders and systemizing your business helps you multiply and beat burnout.
