Hi I see lots of capital and events in Asia. But I also see many reckless investors deploying funds without investment guidelines or a charter in place. There are new family offices that haven’t even seen a single bear market, often with unrealistic return expectations and an overemphasis on risk capital. I hope I can contribute by raising awareness on governance and investment charters. Venture capital should never be the primary driver of capital, yet I am frankly shocked by the amount of reckless investment in instruments with no secondary market and murky deals disguised as private equity or private credit. Everyone brags about achieving 4-7x returns on deals they haven’t exited, all on paper, with no secondary market. I, too, deploy to VC and Private Credits, but they have to be in line with our charter and investment principles, and boxes need to be checked. I worry about the U.S. pure moon shot model for Asia as the market has key structural differences. I prefer VCs with more fundamental focus. Some will learn the hard way; it’s better to learn from old money on how to protect what they have than to criticize them for not taking on too much risks. A lot more governance, investment guidelines, and diversification is needed in Asia.

Thematic Investing and the Asian Private Client: Why, When & How The world is no longer moving in a clear direction, and vast amounts of the gargantuan pool of institutional and private global investible money still flood into Magnificent Seven stocks, which continue to outperform, often spectacularly. But economies, regions, markets and sectors are all undergoing a shift with the sands of time, and while valuations in some key markets and names defy all reality, in other formerly in-favour markets such as #China, valuations have plummeted. But where exactly are we now, and how do clients in Asia best access thematics – through active or passive strategies? That was the core subject of the Hubbis Digital Dialogue event of March 28, partnered by Janus Henderson Investors and CSOP Asset Management, at which a group of experts reported to delegates on the evolution of thematic investing and key avenues to access such exposures amidst the confusing global conditions.
