At 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, where a single person held 32 faculty positions while 211 filled out 2,500 vacancies, is just the tip of the iceberg. This scandal is part of a broader trend where the lofty goals of the NEP 2020, NAAC, and NIRF are being undermined by widespread malpractice across universities. While not every campus is marred by these issues, the disturbing frequency with which they occur reveals a systemic problem. From mandatory accreditations leading to unintended consequences to distorted faculty-to-student ratios designed to game ranking systems, our universities are in crisis. My detailed article unpacks these complexities and calls for immediate action to safeguard the future of our youth and restore integrity in our educational institutions. Dive into the discussion and learn how we can collectively address these critical challenges. Did You Know? Regional public universities and colleges (RPUs) are public institutions that are vital postsecondary access points for many Americans. There are 474 RPUs that enroll 3.8 million full-time equivalent students and 5.1 million students (inclusive of part-time students). Research indicates that RPUs are leaders in promoting upward mobility, educating an estimated 47% of bachelor’s-degree-seeking students attending four-year public institutions. Learn more about these important institutions and the students they serve. https://lnkd.in/euYsybUA

Our 2nd webinar of this season was on the University of Austin (UATX) with Pano Kanelos. UATX is an experimental university in the truest sense of the word: the institution testing a new approach with the goal to become an example, the North Star, for others (hence Polaris on the logo). We will be following UATX to see if its innovations spread. My takeaways after the discussion: 1. Universities are places "where we do our thinking". Amen. 2. "Politics should be studied at the university, not be the operating system." In 1967, the University of Chicago issued the Kalven Report, arguing for universities' political neutrality "out of respect for free inquiry and the obligation to cherish a diversity of viewpoints". Perhaps, this is the standard the academia should strive for. Perhaps, not. What do you think? 3. Talking about diversity of viewpoints, UATX seeks intellectual pluralism, which they define not as diverse opinions held strongly, but rather as any opinions held lightly and ready to be updated if presented with new facts/arguments. 4. Just like countries, universities should have 3 branches of governance: legislative (the Board), executive (the management team), and judicial (the adjudicative panel analyzing cases of potential misconduct). 5. Conceptually, academic freedom is secondary to the academic obligation to seek the truth (this one is a part of Isak Frumin's reflection on the conversation). The pursuit of the truth can also be called, in the words of Pano Kanelos, "practical prudence", the phrase I plan to shamelessly steal and overuse. Godspeed to UATX which has welcomed its first cohort of Bachelor's students this fall, and we hope to see you all at the next #InnovativeUniversities Webinar on Thursday, October 10. Congratulations to my friend Bénédicte Boissard for her outstanding achievement in winning the Best Poster Presentation ("Promoting Conceptual Change in Science Through Oral Expression: A Quasi-Experimental Study") at European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) SIG 20 & 26 Conference 2024. So proud of her! Her study examines whether oral justification and reformulation by students can foster conceptual change and achievement in middle school science. Employing a quasi-experimental design, students participated in both a control (standard teaching) and an experimental (innovative treatment) condition (Taber, 2019). Prior knowledge and misconceptions about mass, volume, and photosynthesis were assessed using multiple-choice questions. Variables such as self-concept and science interest were considered. Involving 400 students from six teachers across five schools in the 2023-2024 academic year, preliminary findings suggest that the innovative treatment resulted in higher gains in both regular and misconception-targeted assessments.

A huge thank you to former Chief Scientist, Professor Alan Finkel, for delivering the Special Address at the ACDS Annual General Meeting entitled ‘Raising the Bar of Aspiration’! A comprehensive summary is on the ACDS website at https://lnkd.in/g2vVWkz8 : Key points: 📚 Maths Education in Schools: - 40% of maths teachers lack specialisation. - High-quality instructional materials (HQIM) are crucial. - Urgent need to upskill out-of-field teachers. - We need more trained maths teachers, but fewer students are choosing maths. 🎓 University Courses and Policies: - Removing maths prerequisites leaves students less prepared and impacts education quality. - Costly, lengthy teacher education deters potential teachers. Simplified entry routes, like 1-year Graduate Certificate programs, are needed. 🌏 Net Zero Transition: - Universities are essential in research and innovation for net zero technologies. - They must tackle societal resistance to renewable projects. - Universities train the workforce and must tailor technologies to Australian conditions. #ACDS #UniveristyScience #ScienceEducation #ResearchExcellence #CollaborativeResearch #UniveristyResearch #ScienceResearch, #HigherEd Australian Research Council Australian Government Department of Education Department of Industry, Science and Resources Ed Husic MP Jason Clare MP Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering The Australian Academy of Science Cathy Foley Universities Australia Science & Technology Australia

While there has been a revived interest in Western academia in reforming the core engineering curriculum and making it more generalized, interdisciplinary, and liberal, the problem is yet to be fully recognized by the local academe. The characterization of the problem of civilizational and cultural alienation of STEM disciplines from local ethos has already been relegated to mere sociopolitical lip service rather than concrete methodological intervention through pedagogical reformation. Since the adoption of the outcome-based education paradigm, we are witnessing a mechanized reduction—albeit myopically well-intended—of the whole education process to measurable goals. In other words, while the academic intelligentsia has embraced its inability to produce original textbooks or curricula, it is now accelerating its paralysis by reducing itself to an automaton, which, by definition, is inherently apathetic. Interestingly, these deformities—impairment and paralysis—are not primarily due to the bureaucratic, paper-pusher adoption of distant paradigms, but due to a lack of creativity and innovation in adopting them.

Research is only meaningful when it is connected to real-world practices. It goes beyond publication; it’s about gaining insights into our practices and continuously improving them. Today, CeRI (Centre for Reearch and Innovation) hosts a webinar titled “From Research to Practice: Insights and Recommendations to Engage Students.” We invited Dr. Asnina Anandan to share key insights from her project, “Yay and Nay to Open and Distance Learning (ODL): A Concurrent-Triangulation Study of Prospective and Current Students.” This study aims to explore the barriers and anxieties that may prevent prospective and current students from enrolling or re-enrolling in ODL institutions. Besides academic staff, we have invited colleagues from marketing and administrative support to join this session. We hope this webinar has provided valuable insights for our staff, encouraging them to view enrolment and re-enrolment from the students’ perspective and to refine our practices to better serve our university community.

https://lnkd.in/geivTjvE Contributing factors to continued underrepresentation include differential treatment of URM faculty in grant funding, topic selection and the peer review process. Using a multi-university sample, this paper found that on top of these contributing factors, URM faculty face barriers in the P&T process, receiving more negative votes and fewer unanimous positive decisions at the college level.

📢 Attention ALL Dublin City University #ResearchStudents 📢 The Graduate Studies Office are delighted to announce that the Tell It Straight competition for 2025 is now open for abstracts. This competition challenges research students to communicate their research, and its potential impact, to a non-specialist audience in a concise, dynamic and innovative way. Communicating your research in a manner that is free from jargon and the ability to engage a non-specialist audience is a crucial skill for research students. This competition is also a means to hear about research that is taking place across the university, not just in your own discipline. The deadline is 4.00pm on Thursday, 28 November 2024. To enter you need to submit a 250-word plain-language abstract. Students can compete in one of three categories: Category 1: Oral Presentation (research students in year 1 only) Category 2: Oral Presentation (research students in year 2 or later) Category 3: Video Presentation (open to research students in all years) For more details, and before submitting your 250-word abstract, please read the rules on the Tell It Straight competition. It is important for all entrants to adhere to the outline of the competition (audience, word count, shortlisting criteria), and thus tailoring your abstract entries accordingly Click here for rules and how to submit ➡ https://lnkd.in/eXtnU4N7. #WeAreDCU #TellitStraight Sharon O'Brien DCU Business School DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing DCU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences DCU Faculty of Science and Health
