Financial Topic Tuesday: Shopping Intentionally for the Holidays! 🛍️ Many of us will be doing a lot of shopping over the next several weeks. Maybe you’ve already started! I am planning a good bit of shopping, mostly on the days following Thanksgiving. It’s when I have the most free time to do it. But, it doesn’t mean I haven’t been planning my spending😄 Here are 4 tips that I share with my clients (and myself!) to be a more intentional shopper. First, make a list. Who and/or what are you shopping for? It can help you focus on the purpose of the shopping and cut down on extra, impulsive purchases. Second, use the 1-hour rule. If online shopping, add item to the cart, and come back an hour later to decide if you still want to make the purchase. If shopping in person, even just an extra 10 minute walk around the store can give you time to think intentionally about about the decision. Third, set reasonable limits. This is tough! But, it can be really helpful to set a pricing guide for how much you want to spend in total or per person or event. The process is about being realistic with what you currently have to spend or what you plan on spending. Fourth, pace yourself. Generally, the shopping doesn’t have to be compressed into one or two days. There will be often be more sales or deals the next day.

It's payday this week! While it might be tempting to indulge and treat yourself a bit more than usual, we have a couple of tips that will help you balance scratching that shopping itch with being smart with your money. 1. Imagine using the item or product. How often do you imagine yourself using the item or product? Is it something that you see in different spaces? Is it something that you can buy secondhand or from a more affordable store? These questions can help you figure out how much you need the item and whether or not it would be a good investment. (You might not need to buy it brand new!) 2. Look for trustworthy reviews. One practice that might help you avoid the dreaded buyer's remorse is actively seeking out trustworthy reviews, not just from families and friends but experts or resource persons who may help you identify what it is that you're buying (in terms of specs or features), how well it performs, and what potential downsides an item or product might have. This will help keep you from leaning into hype or worse, getting a product you didn't even order. 3. Try calculating the cost-per-use of a product. If it's something that you see yourself using frequently, the cost-per-use can help you identify how much value you would get over the long run. (Just divide the cost by the estimated number of times you'll use it in a year.) For example, if you like running, a good pair of sneakers may help you with your training and fitness goals, and if you're training for a race, you may expect to use it more than once a week. Calculating cost-per-use and keeping it in mind along with reviews, your budget, and your goals can help you narrow down options at the store. 4. Explore different ways to pay for the item. If an item might cost too much if you pay full price in one go, financing can help you buy a high-value item at a price that's friendlier to you, your wallet, and your financial goals. To get into the nitty-gritty of these tips, check out our blog post on this link: https://lnkd.in/ggNScTP8
