With the decline in contract labor spending, hospitals are scrutinizing their temporary staffing supply chains. Managed Service Providers (MSPs) using Vendor Management Software (VMS) have been a go-to for over 20 years. However, post-COVID-19, hospitals are wary of hidden financial risks and losses from outsourcing. Hospitals discovered MSPs often withhold up to 5% of pay from subcontracted agencies, meaning only 95% of costs go to agency candidates. Today's technology allows hospitals to manage contingent workforces internally, saving on agency spend. The concept of vendor neutrality is contentious. Ideally, no agencies are favored, but complaints suggest MSPs manipulate order flow to benefit their employees. Non-agency MSPs, without their own caregiver pool, avoid this conflict. To test your MSP’s neutrality: 1. Search your MSP’s ownership. If an agency owns them, confirm how quickly they disseminate orders to vendors. 2. Use the Joint Commission card: Randomly check with approved agencies if they received orders within an hour. 3. Consistent, timely communication indicates true neutrality.
