This report couldn’t come at a more important time. It underscores how vital clean, affordable energy is in building climate resilience, especially for the most vulnerable communities. It’s not just about reducing emissions—it’s about ensuring access to energy that supports food systems, disaster preparedness, and gender equality. This is a timely call to action for more innovative, inclusive approaches that can drive real change where it’s needed most.

Adapting to climate change is already critical in many communities globally, especially in Africa where Energy 4 Impact currently focusses our work. With other energy specialists from around Mercy Corps, I have co-authored a paper on how energy solutions are doing that. There’s still a long way to go, but we are making progress and hope to see more of these initiatives reach the scale they need in order to address the global climate challenge.

The benefits of investing in climate mitigation, nature-positive solutions and appropriate resilience are unparalleled for current and future populations on Earth. Planetary boundary science shows where the most work is needed to support a safe and just transition for economies and societies, given the growing risks to the Earth and our economic dependence on nature and its services. Increasing risks to vital Earth systems (#water included) are already causing businesses to step up on climate action due to tangible implications to their bottom lines. Empowering Citizens as Agents of Climate Action: Insights from New Research In the efforts to combat climate change, much attention has been focused on external solutions such as technological innovations, policy changes, and industry shifts. However, a new study conducted by researchers Gustav Osberg from IIIEE together with Mine Islar and Christine Wamsler from LUCSUS sheds light on an often-overlooked aspect of the transition: the role of citizens as active agents of change. The study delves into citizens' inner lives and their potential to drive collective transformation and system change processes. Titled "Toward a post-carbon Society: Supporting Agency for Collaborative Climate Action," it explores how citizens perceive and address climate change on an everyday level, what motivates them to take action, and how they envision potential future transformation pathways.
