Your relationship with your manager is a two-way street, so make it easy for your manager to know what actions you are waiting on from them — and don’t be shy about following up! I keep a “delegated” list and send summaries regularly on not only what I’ve done (so others can mentally close it out from their end), but also outstanding things that I’m waiting on them for. I also appreciate when people I work with send me clear action items for me to address. This helps keep the conversation moving, putting pressure on the most important things while also providing an opportunity to reasses the things that should be de-prioritized or delegated elsewhere.
Managing up is a key skillset - and also a mindset. It takes a new perspective to realize it’s what your boss actually wants!
