I won't lie, this job search has been quite the odyssey. 🌊 🛶 My pivot into tech really began about 7 years ago with a part-time teaching gig working with middle school students. I was tasked with instructing them (and myself 😅) on HTML/CSS and some very basic JavaScript. After doing that for a couple years, I decided to go all in on building a career in software. I quit my day job at a pathology lab, slowed down my night job as a freelance musician, and enrolled in a bootcamp. From here things happened much quicker than I ever expected. 🏃♂️ 💨 - 3 months learning web development full-time (I grew a lot as a developer and a person during this period 💪) - 2 months of job searching before landing my first gig as a front end engineer (woohoo 🙌) - 8 months working an awesome job before my first layoff (awww man 🤦♂️) Since then, I've spent the last 1.5 years working contracts, learning through self-paced resources online, building individual/group projects, and reorienting my job search around networking. This process has been a mixed bag of exhausting, rewarding, challenging, and enlightening. I may still be #opentowork, but you best believe I'm putting the work in so that things work out! 😌 --- 💡 Know anyone looking for developers with a wide range of experience technical and otherwise? This is a really difficult post for me. I've written and re-written it many times over the past few days. I almost didn't post it at all. Today marks exactly 1 year since I was made redundant. A. Whole. Year. 😢 I could rant about how difficult the search has been for my next role. ● How many times I've been ghosted. ● How many times I've been rejected without an interview. ● How depressed and useless I've felt every single day. ● How few accessibility engineering roles there are. ● How few design systems engineering roles there are. ● How 99% of the recommended jobs in my feed are React/.NET/full-stack. ● How much I regret turning down the 2 offers I had last year. I am still hopeful that there is a role with my name on it. Those of you who know me, or have worked with me previously, will recognise what skills, expertise & passion I bring to the table. My ideal role: ● Design Systems Engineer, or Accessibility Engineer. ● Remote (or maybe hybrid, in UK only). What I do best: ● Building accessible, scalable, performant, responsive UIs. ● Building component libraries. ● Using vanilla code, not massively bloated CSS/JS frameworks. My core skills: ● Accessibility engineering (WCAG, WAI-ARIA). ● Accessibility auditing (NVDA/VoiceOver, AxeCore/WAVE, keyboard only). ● HTML, CSS (Sass, PostCSS), vanilla JavaScript (TypeScript), Web Components. ● Scalable component-based front-end architecture, progressive enhancement, responsive design methodologies and front-end performance optimisation. ● Mentoring. The job search has been tough, and there have been moments of doubt, but I refuse to let setbacks define me. I believe in my skills as a Full-Stack Developer with experience in React, JavaScript, PostgreSQL, and Express. I’ve built applications that solve real-world problems, worked on complex projects, and consistently refined my craft. Every day, I focus on becoming a better developer, no matter how difficult the road might be. The tech industry is competitive, but I’ve embraced this as an opportunity to grow. For every rejection, I code another feature. For every unanswered application, I debug another project. I am determined to turn “no” into “not yet.” I never forget what my instructor Tim McKiernan always said: “Keep working.” Now i really understand that every line of code you write, every bug you fix, and every feature you build is progress, even when it doesn’t feel like it. I don't understand all of this such specific requirements with engineering offers, like at least 3 years of experience with Next, well what if I have 2 years of experience with React Native + 3 years of experience in React, like, do you want an adaptable smart software engineer that will be professional and will always work followings documentation and best practices? Or you just want a bot that only knows how to do one thing? The most important thing in programming or engineering it's understanding computer logic and concepts, the syntax it's just a matter of google search.
