Lots of news in L3Harris's second quarter earnings call, but I found the information their management shared about Aerojet Rocketdyne - which L3Harris closed the $4.7 billion acquisition of about a year ago - the most edifying. Some analysts had to press L3Harris's leadership to get responses to the questions they asked about Aerojet. Excerpts from my story for Aviation Week Network: Aerojet contributed $581 million in revenue (a 7% sequential increase) for L3Harris in the second quarter, during which the company posted overall sales of $5.3 billion–a 13% annual increase–and earnings per share of $3.24 that beat a consensus estimate of $3.18. “This acquisition [of Aerojet Rocketdyne] increases our content on missile platforms and positions us for growth in new markets,” L3Harris CEO Chris Kubasik said in an earnings call. He cited the example of the firm’s role in the Missile Defense Agency’s next-generation interceptor program, which he said leverages L3Harris’s propulsion technology and attitude control systems to defend against long-range ballistic missile threats. Kubasik also noted improvements in Aerojet’s operational performance and the expansion of facilities in Arkansas, Alabama and Virginia. Additionally, when Michael Ciarmoli of Truist Securities requested that L3Harris disclose Aerojet’s second-quarter book-to-bill ratio during the earnings call, Kubasik declined to do so. “I will tell you, we’re not going to disclose book-to-bill by segment at this time,” he said. In regard to “serious challenges” presented by the Aerojet acquisition, Kubasik said that L3Harris had addressed the human capital aspect, “having upgraded the talent pretty much across the board.” He also said the delivery situation was improving, with overdue deliveries reduced by 40% in 12 months.
