Small cruise ships are ripe for going battery and wind powered and dispensing fuel usage altogether. Their slow sailing speeds and shorter voyages through ecologically sensitive areas make them suitable to embark on this change. And Hurtigruten has done just that with their SeaZero project. "The ship concept was developed in the Norwegian city of Ålesund by VARD, one of Hurtigruten’s key partners in the Sea Zero project, and integrates several innovative solutions created in collaboration with partners from the Norwegian maritime industry. Sea Zero is one of several projects from Hurtigruten that focuses on sustainable travel and industry solutions. " Several developments to look out for: 1. Training and upskilling of vessel crew to maintain propulsion batteries, motors and associated equipment. 2. Enhancing of procedures of evacuation in the event of a battery induced fire. 3. Setting up of adequate charging points at ports the vessel is bound to visit. How do you find this concept? Feel free to comment below. #sustainableshipping #decarbonization

𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐟𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞: For more than 15 years, the ocean-faring live grass lawn has traveled worldwide, thriving in all climate zones. The magnificent Celebrity Solstice Cruise ship proudly boasts the title of being the first cruise ship in the world to have over ½ an acre of real grass. For more than a million guests, it has always been in the top ten choices. The success was so great that four additional Celebrity Cruise ships now have the same unique recreational areas where you can feel the grass between your toes. I am the brains behind the innovative smart green roof system that measures only 5 inches thickness. However, the key to its success lies in handpicking and training skilled maintenance staffs that are doing an amazing, proactive job ever since. Cruise ships are often a topic of controversy when it comes to their environmental impact. However, it is important to note that modern cruise ships in the western world regularly surpass environmental regulations and standards set for coastal settlements and hotels. #greenroofs #environment #celebrity #resillient #stormwater #sailing #climatezones #greenrooftechnology

Do you ‘Sea the connection’? We do! 🌊 🌊 🌊 The Wildlife Trusts are asking everyone in the industry to look at their connection with the sea for this year’s National Marine Week (27th July - 11th August). This made us think… 🔗 What’s Tower connection to the sea? 🔗 How has it impacted the way we think? 🔗 Does it affect how we do business? 🔗 Has it helped us develop our services? Being based on the south coast we have a strong maritime heritage. In fact, much of our core DNA as a supplier is based on how we originally developed our services to support the maritime industry. We became the ‘global brand of trust and confidence’ that we are today when Daniel Aris first found the points of difference that attracted customers in the early 2000s to form our cruise division. Our ability to deliver on-time and in-full to ports and docks worldwide is the bedrock of our marine business. The unique understanding we now have of the maritime industry's needs is essential to our success. The game-changing solutions we’ve developed such as our CtrlFlow sustainable cleaning is the result of listening to customers about their challenges onboard ships. So, do we ‘Sea’ our connection to the maritime industry? We certainly do, and we wouldn’t be the tier-1 provider of innovative products and partner of choice without it! #marine #sea #innovation #wearetower #nationalmarineweek

The Port of Seattle is setting a precedent in the cruise industry by prioritizing climate action in its future agreements. By requiring all cruise lines to demonstrate their progress toward greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, the Port is aligning its policies with global sustainability goals. This shift underscores a commitment not only to environmental stewardship but also to fostering transparency and accountability within the industry. As the travel industry evolves, many stakeholders are faced with the challenge of balancing growth with sustainability. For instance, cruise line executives have noted that with an expected 1.8 million passengers and over 300 cruise calls in 2025, it's critical that they adopt low-carbon energy solutions to mitigate environmental impacts. 🌱 Questions abound: How can the cruise industry collectively innovate to meet these new sustainability standards? What steps can be taken to ensure that economic growth does not come at the expense of our planet? The Port of Seattle aims to eliminate emissions from all seaport-related sources by 2050, reflecting a broader maritime decarbonization initiative. As this framework unfolds in Seattle, it will be fascinating to see how other ports and cruise lines respond. Those in the industry are encouraged to share their experiences or plans regarding GHG reduction initiatives. #Sustainability #CruiseIndustry #CruiseNews

𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 VS 𝗔𝗶𝗿 Ocean shipping is like taking a leisurely cruise for your cargo, while air shipping is like giving it a turbo boost with wings. Underwater Radiated Noise from Shipping: An Environmental Concern As global shipping activities continues to rise, so does the impact of underwater radiated noise (URN) on marine ecosystems. This noise, primarily generated by large vessels and their operations, poses a significant threat to marine life and the livelihood of coastal communities. Underwater radiated noise refers to the sounds produced by vessels as they move through water. This noise can travel long distances, often masking the natural sounds that marine animals rely on for communication, navigation, and hunting. The consequences of URN on marine life are profound. Here are some key impacts: 1. Disruption of Communication: Many marine animals communicate through sound. Increased noise levels can interfere with these communications, leading to difficulties in mating and social interactions. 2. Altered Migration Patterns: Species such as whales and fish rely on sound for navigation during migration. Noise pollution can cause them to change their routes, potentially leading to increased mortality or encounters with shipping traffic. 3. Stress and Health Issues: Chronic exposure to high noise levels can lead to stress, impacting the overall health and reproductive capabilities of marine species. Coastal communities that depend on healthy marine ecosystems face significant challenges due to URN. Key concerns includes: 1. Decreased Fish Populations: The disruption of fish behavior can lead to lower fish stocks, directly affecting commercial fisheries and local livelihoods. 2. Impact on Tourism: Many coastal regions rely on ecotourism, including whale watching and diving. Increased noise pollution can diminish the quality of these experiences, driving tourists away. To address the issue of underwater radiated noise, a multifaceted approach is needed: 1. Regulatory Measures: Governments should implement stricter regulations on vessel speed and routing, particularly in sensitive marine areas. Designating marine protected areas where shipping is limited or restricted can help reduce noise pollution. 2. Technological Innovations:Investing in quieter vessel designs and alternative propulsion technologies can significantly decrease URN. Research into innovative hull designs and noise-reducing technologies should be prioritized to make shipping more sustainable. 3. Community Engagement:Coastal communities should be involved in decision-making processes regarding shipping operations. Their insights can lead to more effective and culturally sensitive strategies for managing marine resources. In conclusion, underwater radiated noise from shipping presents a critical environmental concern that threatens marine life and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Protecting marine ecosystems is not just an environmental necessity; it is a moral imperative for the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations. #protectingMarineEcosystem #SustainableMaritimePractice
