Radio Is Your Best Friend #1. I am now in the second year of volontairily abstaining from visiting concerts (i have seen a few thousand concerts and performances over the years), mainly because i got fed up with the rituals and circumstances (for the time being), and often no clues as to wether people actualy did rehearse, or if yes if it mattered that much (oops). (instead i visit theatreplays, i know for sure they rehearsed and had purpose) (& no/yes, music is light entertainment at best- discuss) But I increased my daily dose of sounds and music through radio (apart from listening to the usual ways and channels), each day around 1.5 a 2 hours worth of Given (as in unexpected) programs (etc). I do totally enjoy all kinds of sounds, music, docus, fieldrecs, radioplays, community works, art, djmixes, etc etc. this way. But I do feel overwhelmed at times- because of the massive amounts of new music- and, realising that all that music is also fysically released; the radiofolk never fail to mention that this was so and so's new release (etc ad infinitum) on so and so's label. Everyday i hear -before unknown to me- folks, releasing, having released and will release new stuff. Everyday there must be thousands of new releases, cd's and records, and because a lot of the radiofolk play mostly only fysical releases, they tell me so, and even state they will not play bandcamp or other sources. because of, work? pre filtering thru labels probably? Anyways, here's an example of something very good, passing my ears several times now, because of its lenght its cut up in episodes. Amazing Stuff. Funny Too. Asphyxia. The Idiot (...) Every time I write a review for a show, I learn more and more about what goes into a performance, as well as what is received on the audiences end. I never get tired of it. Although it’s probably not the typical kind of question we’d expect to explore, this is one that we’ve been considering: Is it possible for a music video to be misaligned? First the background, Billy Joel has recently released a new single for the first time in nearly two decades. “Turn the Lights Back On” is, according to Rolling Stone, “a romantic ballad that doubles as a message to the fans who have waited all these years for new music.” Cool. Cool. It’s a beautiful song. A vulnerable song. It’s a song that asks for forgiveness–from both ourselves and others. It’s a love song that requires the wisdom of age to write. It requires a certain amount of time and experience. Billy suggested to Howard Stern that it is a song that addresses a lifetime of regrets. And that’s where the video comes in. Maybe you’ve seen it. It shows Billy singing this brand new song at different times throughout his career. He’s signing it as a young performer. And so on. It’s been lauded as an AI masterpiece. (If it uses AI it has to be good, right?) Insert needle scratch sound here. But wait. Didn’t we just agree that this song is about a lifetime of regrets? Didn’t we just suggest that the song is both a love letter to his fans and a confession of a human who lost sight of his love? He sings: I'm late, but I'm here right now / Is there still time for forgiveness? / Won't you tell me how? / I can't read your mind / But I see you now / As we're layin' in the darkness / Did I wait too long / To turn the lights back on? Thus the misalignment. The disconnect. A young Billy Joel can’t authentically sing this song. He doesn’t have enough life experience. He hasn’t curated enough wisdom. So when we see Billy singing this song all through his life–it takes away (some of?) the power of the message. The song is not being celebrated by this video; technology is. Still, fans seem to love the video. The media has fawned over it. So, perhaps it’s best to chalk this one up to art and leave it at that. Perhaps it’s unfair to pull art through alignment frameworks or view it through an alignment lens. What do you think? Does the video do justice to the song? Or is this just another example of all things AI getting love? Curious to hear/read your thoughts. Happy Monday. #BillyJoel #Alignment #Art
