The attached is important reading for all Trustees and below is some personal pointers. - Charities don’t need Treasurers; this is a myth. There is no legal requirement to have one. No where on the Charity Commission website does it say you should have one. Finance is the equal responsibility for all Trustees (this is clearly laid out by the Charity Commission guidelines) and by having a Trustee, all you are doing is giving Trustees the opportunity to pass the buck and not be 100% accountable. By all means have a Finance Committee if it is a large charity but do not have a named Treasurer. -  Less is more when it comes to the number of Trustees required, a charity should have. Too many slows down decision making, meetings can become too long and the charity can quickly drift from its strategy. -  Many charities hold excessive reserves for no sensible reason and by doing the Trustees are failing on one of their duties, ‘ensuring the charity is carrying out its purposes for the pubic benefit. -  Charity Finance can be complex and difficult for some Trustees. If after training, you still can’t distinguish between a profit and loss and balance sheet or follow a cash flow, you should ask yourself, should you remain a Trustee? - Board Meetings that go on longer than 90 minutes are counter productive Penny Wilson Getting On Board Ian McLintock Nick Sladden Giles Kerkham Norfolk Community Foundation Charity Excellence - a FREE one-stop-shop for everything a non-profit needs.
