🤔 Ever feel like a smartphone at a flip phone convention? That's often the life of a tech pro in a non-tech org! After 20+ years of dancing between bits and boardrooms, here's my take on the digital oasis (or mirage?) of being the resident tech guru in a sea of "traditional" business: 👍 Pros: 1. You're the Wizard of Oz (minus the curtain) - Everyone thinks you have magical powers. Use them wisely! 2. Innovation playground - You can introduce tech that makes a REAL impact. It's like being the first person with fire in the Stone Age. 3. Cross-pollination of ideas - Blend tech with other domains. Who knew accounting could be so... exciting? 😉 4. Stand out like a RGB keyboard at a typewriter museum - Your skills are unique and valued. 5. Potential to drive significant change - Be the digital transformation hero your company didn't know it needed. 👎 Cons: 1. "Can you fix my printer?" - Prepare to be the go-to for ALL things with a power button. 2. Cultural divide wider than the gap between Windows 95 and Windows 11. 3. Budget battles - Explaining why that $10K server is necessary can feel like pitching Netflix to a silent film enthusiast. 4. Keeping up with tech trends while your colleagues debate the merits of fax machines. 5. Loneliness - Sometimes you just want to debate tabs vs. spaces, but no one understands. 😢 💡 Pro Tip: Success in this role isn't just about your tech skills. It's about being a digital diplomat, translating tech-speak into business value, and yes, occasionally performing minor miracles (or at least convincing people you have). Remember, whether you're coding in a cubicle or presenting in the boardroom, you're bridging worlds. It's challenging, but oh so rewarding when you see the lightbulb moments! What's your experience? Hosted a great chat today with some other materialist-left tech projects on this annoying thing where there's a small number of us, and we all like each other, and we're all tendering for the same work all the time. It sucks. General feeling that we've not yet worked out ways to work cooperatively over the left-tech group of coops, and that most spaces that are "just a slack" or "just a web forum" tend to just turn pretty quickly into yet another place for people to post offers of work and don't actually create conditions for change. I think for us to have a survivable future we need to radically increase the size of the left-tech economy and build culture and infrastructure around shared problems that are bigger than all of us. The client/studio pattern is so hard to break but it feels like it keeps things permanently within the realm of the for profit vertical integration pattern we see in the wider tech world. We need to be more ambitious and pitch for stuff collectively. Lots to think on! (cc Diner Ismail Jan Baykara, i think the others are not on here)
