4 Phases of Team Development Just looking at this old work again (Tuckman, 1965). What makes it old fashioned and naïve is assuming: 1. Movement through the 4 phases is linear, and 2. Leadership is top down. Letting go of those two outdated assumptions enables us to use this model again in a fully modern way. The reality is that these ARE four COMMON team situations. And knowing how to spot them and deal with each of them improves our consistency and success as team leaders. Modern Insights: 1. Phases can overlap, and we can slosh back and forth between them. 2. Things change: e.g., every new hire kicks off another journey through the four phases; and corporate and industry change can send teams back into the Storming phase. 3. Leadership: You can engage your team in improving teamwork at any and all phases; and you can empower your team to take ownership for teamwork results.
