Entrepreneurs are a global community, connected by shared experience. Even so, we often feel isolated and lonely. Connection makes a difference. I knew when I took the role as CEO at the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) travel was part of the role. But this isn’t an organization that can be managed from a spreadsheet in an office. So, I knew I needed to get to as many regions as possible out of the gate. That meant seven of the 10 in the first six months. This "listening tour" was all about meeting members, member leaders, and tenured members for their feedback - in a startup you’d call it customer development. We need to answer the question "are we shipping” the products and services the customer, in our case the member want! I’m reminded how every entrepreneur faces a common set of challenges centered on strategy, execution, leadership, and securing new paths to sustainable growth. All within the constraints of scarcity - money, time, and people. You never have unlimited resources - so how you prioritize those limited resources is critical. As a leader, there is a certain requirement to be “always on.” But there’s also the personal dimension. Managing stress. Figuring out how to be present and engaged at home no matter how tired you are. Finding time to relax with hobbies and exercise (cycling for me). Entrepreneurship is global because the experience is universal. When times are tough, remind yourself that you’re never alone – there are kindred spirits wherever you go. It’s one of the reasons EO members so often recruit fellow entrepreneurs from different backgrounds who bring new perspectives to the local Chapters and Forums. Meeting EO members who share something I’ve experienced before makes me inspired to carry their stories into my next meeting. Because there’s great value in sharing what’s stressing you out with a group of fellow travelers who understand and share what’s worked for them inside and outside of the office. I see time and again how our members enter a Forum meeting after long stretch at the office and leave refreshed, renewed, and just a little better armed to face tomorrow’s challenges. It’s why we do what we do. For my US friends, have a great Thanksgiving! Be present, find some time to relax! Entrepreneurs' Organization #founder, #entrepreneur
Thank you for your leadership, Dave! We had our first tenured member get together in Dallas last week and it was a reminder of how immense value and support we give one another in EO... local, global and universal!
#entrepreneursorganization is an amazing community. And to me a community is similar to a fabric and connections in that community are similar to threads in a fabric.
Well said Dave Parker You're spot-on. We always forget the RELAX. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving as well.
