We've all got our thoughts on Google Analytics 4 (GA4) - you either love it or you hate it (and most of the marketers I know hate it). Regardless, GA4 provides some important reporting features we can use to measure the current user experience and the impact our work has made. Some key areas I monitor on a regular occasion beyond your standard engagement rate metrics: ✨ Tracking user interactions Setting up effective event tracking allows us to gather data on the on-page actions users take on your website, from button clicks to form submissions. When creating landing pages for marketing campaigns, we work closely with our marketing teams to ensure event tracking is set up in a way that allows us to best track the user engagement and the ROI of our SEO and PPC campaigns. 🔀 User behaviour tracking Path Exploration reports in GA4 give you a visualisation of what pages users land on and how they go on to flow through your web pages. While we find Microsoft Clarity a much better tool for tracking user behaviour and a deeper level, these reports give us a top-level view of user journeys and help us identify popular routes after users land on key pages, such as the home page. 📱 Device usage Not only can we track engagement metrics across different devices, but it's also important to consider mobile usage when reviewing other areas of analytics. If we can see that engagement rates are lower on mobile devices, we can filter our path exploration reports to show mobile-only traffic. Here we can identify where users may be taking different journeys across multiple devices. There are so many ways in which we can track the user experience in Google Analytics and supporting that with data from other sources such as Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar can allow you to really understand how people are engaging with your site.

Today I am prepping for a deepish-dive GA4 Class that I am doing for one of my clients and their team. The marketing team wants to learn how to know what is working in their digital strategy. GA4 can't give them the whole picture, it can help their team understand some basics. Here are some highlights that I am going to review in my deepish-dive class. 1️⃣ Track Overall Traffic from Search 📊 Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition: Compare date ranges to see if your search traffic is trending up or down. Remember to account for seasonality. 2️⃣ Monitor Traffic to Specific Pages 🔍 Engagement > Landing page: Filter for organic sessions to understand which pages are driving traffic. Prioritize optimization efforts based on page-level insights. 3️⃣ Analyze Conversion Rates 📈 Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition: Customize reports to include conversion rate metrics. Focus on quality traffic that leads to conversions, not just traffic volume. 4️⃣ Evaluate Conversion Rates per Landing Page 🔍 Engagement > Landing page: Filter organic sessions and customize reports to see conversion rates for individual pages. Optimize high-impact pages for maximum ROI. 5️⃣ Assess Engagement of Low-Ranking Pages 🔍 Engagement > Landing page: Identify pages with low engagement rates despite strong SEO basics.
