Delighted to introduce my latest project on GitHub! I've just uploaded comprehensive instructions for setting up and using Apache Kafka on your local machine. For those unfamiliar, Kafka is like a super-smart system for handling lots of data really quickly – perfect for all sorts of real-time projects! My GitHub post dives into the fundamentals of Kafka, its architecture, and its use cases. But the real highlight? I've included step-by-step instructions to effortlessly install and utilize Kafka on Windows. From starting Zookeeper to firing up Kafka servers and communicating with producers and consumers – everything is covered. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gs_MaCVQ Feel free to explore, share, and contribute! We have a recently had a request by a member of the community to change how we use #GitHub, in a way that, in-theory, will make things easier for community contributors. Our chief contributing officer Andrew Hutchings explains the current state and potential change. Read and vote - Where should new MariaDB Server features go in future? - Versioned branch (current method) or - Main / trunk branch (proposed method) https://lnkd.in/dMcwcMJi

To satisfy my own curiosity about the global open source community, I counted self-reported countries for the 150k+ most popular GitHub users (>= 70 followers). I am surprised by the high rate of voluntary self-reporting (70%)! The geographic distribution of popular open source people closely resembles my expectations (based on previous research). Here are the countries with > 1% of the most popular GitHub users. Special thanks to https://lnkd.in/gAsmyP23 for his really cool datasets! #opensource #supplychain #technology #data #publicpolicy

Apache XTable had its 1st release today 🎉 It's been only 4 months since we donated Apache XTable (Incubating) to the Apache Software Foundation. The project has had some great momentum since it was introduced last year. The community engagement, diverse set of contributors, mentors & users are something that drives all of this. It has also made some real impact to enterprise solutions and open source projects to help table formats be 'interoperable'. So, customers can choose their desired compute for that specific format. ✅ Microsoft Fabric + Snowflake -> uses XTable to support Iceberg along with Delta Lake, thereby allowing to interoperate between these 2 platforms. ✅ Apache Hudi support in Delta Lake UniFormat is facilitated by XTable. Having worked with multiple users/customers to implement lakehouses in the past couple years, I know some of the pressing problems that interoperability can solve. It is important for table formats to be 'interoperable' in an open data architecture. Today, 0.1.0 is out. Although this was focused mostly on improvements & getting ASF complaint (codebase, infra), we are getting the foundations robust. Check out the release notes (link in comments)! 🌟 Interested in applying XTable or contributing to it? Reach out or add a PR. #dataengineering #softwareengineering
