Yesterday morning, it was my turn to deliver a 10 minute presentation. I chose to create a video of my slideshow with a voiceover. It was a great success, allowing me to adhere to the 10-minute timeframe with two additional minutes for questions. I can also see the value in using these kinds of slideshows if one is nervous about public speaking. Alternatively, one could create a five-minute slideshow and speak for the remainder of the time. I'm considering changing it up next time to create an even better visual experience. Another advantage is that I can share my presentation with those who weren’t able to attend the meeting and an even wider audience on YouTube. One of the easiest places to find humor in your stories is in the obstacles. Obstacles put people out of their comfort zone and can make them confront annoying gatekeepers. Discomfort and aggravation are universal, unless you're perfect and perfect people aren't funny. If you have a personal flaw that gets in the way of your goal, that's an obstacle, that's relatable and that's where humor lives. So if you're the type of person who really wants to be taken seriously at work but is constantly late for zoom meetings, or you're a perfectionist teamed up with someone who's not, lean into it in your storytelling. For more on the essentials of storytelling for speakers, check out this edition of my free newsletter, letstalkfunny.substack.com
