The second session the #Friday #Frontiers talks takes place on Friday 8th November 2024, 10.30am WET / 11.30am CET / 12.30pm EET Title: #Visualising #Knowledge: #3D #Digital #Editions and Their Scholarly Potential Speakers: Prof. Susan Schreibman (Maastricht University) and Dr. Costas Papadopoulos (Maastricht University). Registration Details: https://lnkd.in/eHt9uZAg Abstract: Scholarship in three dimensions can transcend the limitations of traditional two-dimensional representations of objects that exist in the physical world in three dimensions. It has the ability to provide users (both researchers and the public) with immersive and interactive experiences, enhancing their study and interpretation. This is true for 3D representations of individual objects and for more complex reconstructed scenes. 3D Digital Scholarly Editions add a contextualising layer of scholarship to the model: scholarship that has been possible for several decades for text-based editions. The contextualising possibilities share much with traditional digital scholarly editions in terms of textual annotation and apparatus, but it also has the possibility of, not only incorporating multimodal annotation (images, video, as well as other models), but annotation that is 3D-specific, such as tools for measurement, for views into the model, the use of textures and colours to represent reconstruction and hypothesis. The presenters of this talk have been addressing these challenges and potential through two interrelated projects: PURE3D which is developing an infrastructure for the development and publication of 3D Digital Scholarly Editions, and OPER3D which is exploring Open Publication and Peer Review for 3D Scholarship. As such, this talk will also consider issues related to data preservation, standardisation, as well as issues around the publication and peer review of 3D DSEs. This presentation will showcase the scholarly potential of 3D DSEs, advocating for their adoption as a new tool in the DH toolkit for new formats for the dissemination and interrogation of knowledge.

NEW PAPER IN EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS AVAILABLE OPEN ACCESS Have you ever thought about using smart service systems to improve our practice of sitting? Constantly sitting in harmful postures is one important driver of adverse health outcomes. In our new paper in European Journal of Information Systems that is available open access we use sociological practice theory to conceptualize the practice of sitting and develop a smart service system to help humans change posture when the system predicts back problems. Conceptually, we highlight that design principles for systems with close contact to the human body are best considered as 'trade-offs' constantly challenging designers to navigate tensions between technological possibilities versus emerging practices. As stated, the paper is available open access! It was fun to work on this with Janina Sundermeier, Hannes Rothe, Stefan Hanke, Abayomi Baiyere, Fabian Rappert, and Martin Gersch. All I have to say is: Yes, technological advances in our field have brought uncertainty, discussions about our new role, disbelief, opportunity, learning, exits from the profession and so many mixed feelings all at once that it can be overwhelming. But, to everyone out there that denies the truth at hand, jump on the bandwagon or else you will be the discontinued “product.” Take the plunge, AI is not out to end humanity (yet - I’m kidding! 😂). It is another tool to keep on our belt and use. It’s funny to state this, but you might have noticed - if you’ve used more than one - that each has its own “personality,” so to speak. The way you devise your prompts are forced to reflect this (my personal experience, yours might be different). I’ve seen better performance in one for certain tasks than in another. I’ve seen limitations that can be compensated by combining these tools. Now, do not confuse using these tools with translating in its pure sense. As Danielle DeCruz-Sanchez wonderfully said in her presentation in this very program: WE MUST BE THE CURATORS. We must carefully, professionally, and “expertly” (not sure that’s even a word. If it isn’t yet, I hereby declare it as such because is definitely applies 😂) choose what has value, just as a museum curator, art gallery curator, and so many others. We are witnesses to a new dawn with endless possibilities. Whether we adapt and evolve is up to us. I choose to face the challenge and evolve. And yes, I’m having a tremendous amount of fun doing it!

On today's #ResearchSpotlight, we share a scoping review for assistive technology service provision. Despite the high unmet need for effective AT provision worldwide, there's a notable absence of widely accepted guidelines in this crucial field. However, there's hope on the horizon! A recent review has shed light on the current landscape and paved the way for the development of globally applicable AT service provision guidance. This review, conducted with meticulous attention to detail, utilized a comprehensive approach, including systematic searches of academic databases and consultation with esteemed international #AT organizations and experts. Through this method, we identified 35 publications from various countries, covering a spectrum of assistive products, personnel, and provision contexts. However, what became apparent is the lack of established guidelines for AT service provision. Nonetheless, amidst this diversity, several key service delivery steps emerged, laying the groundwork for potential future guidelines. This review marks a significant step towards addressing the global need for standardized AT provision practices. By leveraging insights from diverse contexts and aligning with initiatives such as the WHO-GATE 5 P framework, we're poised to develop guidance that transcends borders and meets the needs of individuals worldwide.
