Becoming a tech founder has been the most ambitious and risky decision I have ever taken in my career. As a former financial news editor, it required me to develop a strong conviction that I could manage such a complex project as a tech startup. 🚀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗼𝗻? I founded a publishing platform leveraging early generative AI technology, Storya and continue to see the rise of AI as transformative. I closely follow companies working on open-source large language models and agentic frameworks (essentially, more autonomous AI models), as their innovations will unleash massive changes across many other industries. ⏳𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲? My projects range from creating software prototypes to consulting and content creation. To stay organised, I depend on Notion for scheduling and task management. Superhuman Email helps me tackle my inbox efficiently, while AI tools like OpenAI and Anthropic assist with prompt engineering experiments and other tasks using their models. ✍️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝟮𝟳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿? Having engaged with startup communities in Asia, Europe, and Silicon Valley, I've noticed a gap in nurturing entrepreneurship here in Singapore. Navigating the Intersection of Technology, Social Media & Responsibility to save humanity and work towards Humanity's Flourishing. This is it. In today's digital landscape, the power of technology and social media to shape our world is undeniable. However, with great power comes great responsibility. As we marvel at the advancements in current technologies and development, it's crucial to reflect on the impact they have on society. Google, often referred to as the artificial earth, stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It was created with the noble intention of organizing the world's information and making it universally accessible and useful. Social media platforms, too, offer unparalleled freedom to design and disseminate content. They provide a platform for expression, connection, and collaboration. However, the unrestricted nature of these platforms can sometimes lead to the spread of misinformation, division, and harm. We must acknowledge the dichotomy between the empowerment and the dangers inherent in these technologies. While they enable learning, innovation, and growth, they also can perpetuate inequality, amplify biases, and erode the fabric of society. It's time to recognize that full freedom without accountability can lead to dire consequences. What does start-up life have in common with space travel? 👩🚀 🌕 --- (apart from the bad food) --- Just like a lunar mission, a spin-off venture can only succeed with a balanced and complementary team that keeps a cool head in face of challenges, communicates openly and really works together. Building such a team is key to successful spin-off creation, although it may be the least theoretically defined step. So what to keep in mind when looking for the right associates? ✅ Embrace differences. Look for complementarity and consider recruiting people with different genders, cultures and expertise. They bring in vantage points different from yours. ✅ Be open and honest. Especially when it comes to financial incentives and ambitions.
