We have a new beer coming, and it is one we never anticipated making.   About a year ago, our friends at the Sheraton Hotel challenged us to make a beer using honey from their culinary garden on the rooftop of the Sheraton downtown. The sales team and I got very excited. The brewers, not so much.   Honey in a beer… Isn't someone else in DFW doing that already? And it's their flagship beer, right? Yes, which is why we knew we couldn't also use citrus. That made the challenge even harder because the flavors pair perfectly together!   After a year of playing with variations and sometimes avoiding the project altogether, we created a beautiful honey lager that our brewers love just as much as the sales team. You can taste the honey, but it's not over the top or too sweet. And no fake adjuncts. It's truth to materials with the honey exactly as it should be.   Now, it needs a name! We've been brainstorming, and we need help. Do you love any of these names or have ideas?   Buzz Brigade Bee-52 (I can't believe how much I love this one) Buzz Bomber Sweet Victory (might be a trademark violation) Honeycore Golden Cargo   It will be on tap on Tuesday. It's not ready for distribution yet. We need a name first so then we can label it!

Good piece from Dave Infante on VinePair with commentary from Bryan Roth. This is an honest reflection of the current tension in the business. I've been preaching for a while "What got us here won't get us there." It's not my phrase - that credit is to Marshall Goldsmith, but it's pointedly true. From the article: "'You have to start thinking more about what you’re making as a vehicle for these flavor experiences, and not as a representation of what the beer [style] is.' Put another way, brewers have to stop thinking like brewers, and start thinking like customers." It's incredibly hard for anyone who enjoyed the wave of success pre 2019. Brewers were trend setters. Customers flocked to them for the NEXT THING. Drinkers delved into books, social media and brewery tours to learn. It was a wonderful and simpler time for beer. But those phases do not last by nature. Within this mess, there is always a place for "beer flavored beer" and breweries that uphold its virtue. Using beer styles that were designed to categorize beers for competition's sake and side-by-side comparison as marketing terms to consumers was never going to work long term. I have been hung up on a stat that Bart Watson shared from the Harris Poll results that ~50+% of consumers that don't drink craft beer abstain because they do not like the flavor... This bewilders me as there are more flavor possibilities and representations in beer today than ever before in history. Could the answer be dropping antiquated and non-consumer-friendly beer styles to describe our beers and using flavor anchors to position our products? We MUST be better at conveying the things that matter to drinkers if we want them to pull our products off the shelf!

Thought of the day… Why are beer distributors still responsible for cleaning draft beer lines in some states? The idea is to protect their product, right? The reality is they subcontract line cleaning out to draft beer line cleaning companies for the lowest bid. What does this mean? When you look for the lowest bid you likely won’t get the highest quality work… What does this really mean? It means that distributors care for quality but are unwilling to truly invest in their product in the field. This ultimately hurts quality- case and point this unnamed major chain account in downtown San Francisco has their lines cleaned ever 2 weeks. The result is an aweful draft system and pour draft beer. This hurts the restaurants sales. Invest the in quality- quality beer, quality equipment and quality maintenance and your location will scream quality. #pacificdraftworks #draftbeer #cleandraftbeerlines

🍺 this week’s beer/leadership musing: In my first foray into a New South Wales pub I tried to order a pot of their finest. The response was: “Stupid Victorian, we have schooners here” So I ordered a pot of schooner*…. Which didn’t go well either (For non-Australians: ‘pot’ + ‘schooner’ are names for glass sizes, which oddly differ between states) When I finally got my beer 2 more odd things: It tasted a lot like the yeast bombs in Victoria and another patron referred to it as ‘mother’s milk’ - presumably to endorse its distinction? Pureness? I wasn’t sure (and still aren’t) Since that time the choice of beer has broadened considerably and we seem to order schooners or pints. My experience of leadership has similarly developed. Initially it came with different labels, but was expressed very similarly. Nowadays the label ’leadership’ covers all kinds of expressions. Some are outdated. Some have a legacy that is no longer useful. Most of the newer ones are more flavourful + unique. It has progressed to the point that people have a choice and (like craft beer), many are exercising that choice. What’s your experience? Ballantine was founded in 1840 in Newark, New Jersey, by Peter Ballantine who emigrated from Scotland. Ballantine rented an old brewing site which had dated back to 1805. It was originally incorporated as the Patterson & Ballantine Brewing Company. Around 1850, Ballantine bought out his partner and purchased land near the Passaic River to brew his Scottish ale. His three sons joined the business and in 1857 the company was renamed, accordingly, as P. Ballantine and Sons. By 1879, it had become sixth-largest brewery in the U.S., twice as large as Anheuser-Busch. In the mid-1960s the company went into decline. It was losing market share to lighter lagers with less alcohol content. (Hmmm … sounds modern day familiar 🤔) Despite advertising efforts to revive the company, the owners agreed to sell the brand, the company, and all their assets … to the Falstaff Brewing Corporation. The name would be used for the next 115 years, until the company closed its brewery in 1972.
